Eight days after the abrupt departure of top NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, ESPN has lost another revered basketball reporter.

The Athletic reported Thursday that ESPN laid off Zach Lowe on Thursday in a move to save money. According to The Athletic, Lowe was earning more than $1 million per year.

Lowe joined ESPN in 2012 as a writer with Grantland and was most recently a senior writer who hosted “The Lowe Post” podcast in addition to appearing on “NBA Today” and “NBA Countdown.” Awful Announcing reported Lowe was on ESPN yesterday previewing the Los Angeles Lakers season.

“Given ESPN just lost Adrian Wojnarowski in unexpected circumstances and has struggled for years when it comes to featuring a revolving door of NBA personalities… this move is tough to figure out, no matter how much it helps ESPN’s bookkeeping,” Awful Announcing wrote Thursday.

In mid-August, ESPN fired “NFL Countdown” host Sam Ponder and football analyst Robert Griffin III for financial reasons, The Athletic reported. Both people made more than $1 million per season.

Longtime ESPN staffer and host of “Get Up” and “Greeny” Mike Greenberg took over “NFL Countdown.”

Then, on Sept. 18, Wojnarowski announced he was retiring from ESPN and journalism and becoming the general manager of men’s basketball at St. Bonaventure, his alma mater. He was introduced there on Wednesday.
