VCF Remote Employees Far from BC Offices - Are we being forced to relocate or leave?

I am a former VMW employee, now at BC and part of VCF division, working remotely. I live many hundreds of miles from the nearest BC office, and am unable to relocate my family.

With the recent announcement that “every VCF employee will work from an office”, my manager informed me it’s likely that soon (when?) I will be required to comply even though I am nowhere near a BC office. There’s a lot of ambiguity – he’s reading the tea leaves as much as I am.

I’m a bit panicked this means I’ll soon be forced out. My manager is working to justify me remaining as a remote employee but let’s face it – at this company you can’t fight City Hall and I have little faith that he’ll be able to secure any exception for me.

Are other VCF remote employees facing a similar situation, and if so, how are you attempting to navigate this?

Hocks policy against WFH is very strict. No exceptions.

I can walk on water! As long as it’s frozen and Hock is embedded inside of it. Now I can WFH.

Such an easy way to get people to leave, it’s a dream come true for the Hack man.

One possible solution: badge in, turn around, and walk out. Doesn't eliminate cost of and time for commute. But it's a classic work-around!

I'm just waiting to get wacked. There is no point in relocating when you're going to get fired anyways. Nothing can save your job.

Hocks no WFH rule has no exceptions that I’m aware of

But they’ll probably pay out your dec bonus and RSUs if u havent been laid off already

Been at Broadcom around 12 years.

Hocks policy against WFH is very strict. No exceptions. If u can’t move then u need to start looking for a new job. Probably u can stick around till dec to pick up some RSUs and bonus.

But the chance for u to work from home is zero unless you are absolutely critical. If you’re absolutely critical to a big project or maybe if u have a critical medical condition then you’re chances of WFH are still very very low but maybe not zero.

Facts after Broadcom acquired VMware:

  1. 20% Pay cut for P6's
  2. Significant RSU's that need to vest over 4 years
  3. Layoffs of incredibly talented people so they don't have to pay out RSU's with more layoffs to come

Less 'Facts' but personal opinions:

  1. Michael Dell started this mess when he robbed VMware's war chest to pay off his Debt
  2. People that are forced to relocate due to RTO have to pay out of pocket to do so (with no guarantee that they won't be fired afterward)
  3. Broadcom is an incredibly toxic place to work with 'leadership' that is neutered by Hock Tan.
  4. Hock Tan manages Broadcom like you would have expected a company to do 20 years ago (his quarterly 'line of doom' coffee talks are a perfect example). It is a fear based culture and managers in the environment are neutered as a result (e.g. don't expect managers to go to bat for you / rock the boat even if something is completely off kilter)
  5. In general, the market has sympathy for what Broadcom has done to VMware but the longer you choose to stay the longer you put your career at risk

It’s all soft layoffs every couple months. How do you think that 1/2 the company is gone and not and single report about it in the media? Yet Microsoft lays off 650 employees from Xbox and it’s headline news.

This is another soft layoff. Dont think just because you comply by moving that you won’t still get laid off, hock has a headcount he’s trying to hit and he’ll do that regardless of who he sc--ws over in the process.

Same boat as you, VCF employee being told I'll soon need to relocate to an office. I'm choosing to do so for 1-2yrs to rake in more RSUs, or until I can't hack it anymore. I don't have kids and wife's job is remote, which opens up this option.

remote work is over in many places now, its not 2020. Hybrid is the new norm I am seeing everywhere now.

I'm honestly not sure where they'll put you people. I work in Ft. Collins and there's not an empty seat to be had. And this office is noisy as he-l, hard place to be productive all day. Other offices may have more available space?

I am in the same exact situation (live in the mid-west USA, have been remote employee for over a decade). It's time to leave, have aggressively ramped my search. Am considering contract roles, as an income bridge if necessary until I land a FT role elsewhere. If I'm lucky, I'll make it thru end of this year to claim my bonus and RSU vest but that would be gravy on top for me.

Good luck.
