Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Joining Exxon tax was a terrible decision

So frustrated and I just don’t care anymore. They lied to me. They told me there would be lots of opportunities here. They said after coronavirus there were lots of retirements and resignations that more opportunities were available for newer and younger hires that didn’t exist before. And that it was a long-term stable career. So I accepted and joined Exxon tax.

Liars!!! They restructured tax as an add to another group recently. Now rumors of another restructure coming in October. The assistant tax manager is an outsourcing specialist. They are doing an organization study with a consulting group and have a change manager position that started a few month ago. Everybody is looking for another job. Almost all the jobs are moving overseas people say.

All year they’ve been flying in people from Argentina to stay for months. One group all the managers are from Argentina and they protect each other openly talking in Spanish in front of their staff. How inclusive! I heard some are even dating and party with their favorites. I bet they were fair during assessments.

Another group had all their great assignments that people try to achieve already move to Argentina. In another group even the managers openly talk about looking for another job. And another group one of the managers is a known to be creepy with the ladies.

WTF kind of organization did I join?!

The main tax manager nobody likes. Even the managers and supervisors mock her and have inside jokes with their staff about her. I was shocked they would openly joke about her. During coronavirus they said she was so insensitive and celebrated cutting people. I haven’t heard anybody say anything positive about her.

There is no future here. Nobody is happy here. They are liars.

Maybe you can just leave the company? Just find another job. If a job is bad for you, leave.

@OP Is someone forcing you to stay?

If it was a mistake then fix it by changing what you do. Don’t waste your life living with an avoidable sense of regret doing a job you despise.

Maybe its just me but I will never understand being this pi---d when I could just quit and get another job. Jobs come and go, it sounds like you have been angry at XOM for awhile. Like the other person said, just go in peace.

Not sure who's posting using this "Fitc-ctx-sitra", but whoever it is, stop it! There's only 1 US person in that group and you are not it!!! You can effect other people's careers or lives. Either own your words yourself or stay Anonymous!

Creep targets

  • under 30
  • female w/ above avg looks

Creep moves

  • trying to be welcoming
  • thinks he’s charming
  • convinces prey he’s a mentor
  • frequent check ins
  • uncomfortable dialogues

He’s creeping up the career ladder .. based on the likes, people know who it is yet nothing is being done. It’s one thing to restructure, cut cost, lie about career growth but it’s another thing to allow a creep around targeting women in their early career.

lol. “This is a hard place to work and not for everyone!” What in the world are you smoking? Thanks for encouraging a toxic work environment. Instead of addressing the concerns, you accept and preach - “it is what it is”

Smh.

Say it with me
"It's gonna get better!"
Only the folks in the C-suite know what the place will look like in 5 years, and even that will change again before we get through those 5 years.
Look all around you, and in other departments - half the company is dating or married. There are controls in place to ensure you have no voice in a rank session if you're an interested party. You may think someone was unfairly ranked higher due to a relationship, while that person may think they've been ranked lower because of it. Meanwhile, maybe just do your job to the best of your ability.
This is a hard place to work, and it's not for everyone. And based on what we see all around us it will be a hard place to remain working, and with fewer folks on a US salary.

I am from the same tax group. Everything OP said is true especially the one about the creep.

Anyone need to buy a Tory Burch purse?

If you can work from home, then XOM can work from India (or BA or Hungary or KL). Millenials, Gen Z and and Gen A are going to learn about competition the hard way. You better have a skill that cannot be out sourced to a country where labor is one third your cost. Unfortunately there is a lot of global talent. Plus other companies outside the poil industry will do the same, so opportunities outside oil and gas will diminish. AI can replace a lot of lawyers and other talent.

All the restructuring and offshoring cost cutting is terrible for anyone in a HC10 country.
Was hired 6 years ago and worked hard for the company. Consistently ranked O or E. My work has secured millions in increased earnings for the company. Now my role and all like it are being relocated and my career here is over. Painful to hear management like through their teeth that they care about employees

well... during coronavirus and just after the new reality did not hit yet. if you were recruited then, chances are that your hiring manager did not know what's coming with the restructuring. this used to be a company where you can count with a long career. not anymore. so yes, you are right to be frustrated by the difference between the "promise" of being hired to EM and the reality. forget their promises and make decisions based on the reality. they are not telling us the truth about how this organisation will look like in 5 years time.
