Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Intern rollovers?

With all the talk about upcoming layoffs, does anyone know if intentions to rollover intern hires to full time will be more favourable than last year? In years prior to last, I was told this was typically a 90+% conversion. Makes me question the ROI and viability of have a hiring program such as this.

A few years at Qualcomm can be good for a recent grad. Long term maybe not so much. SD is nice, but I think if you work in SD, your next job is likely to not be in SD, simply because most opportunities are located somewhere else.

Just a job dude! Getting to live in beautiful SD is a huge perk. Gaslamp quarter in SD trumps samosas and Chai in BA.

Once you start working in Qualcomm, you will be pretty useless soon. I have known several folks who were laid off after working for 10 plus years. They have not found anything after more than a year looking. You don't want to end like them.

Absolutely agree; new grads should try to find a startup opportunity. Unfortunately new grad software engineers are plenty so the competition is quite stiff. I have friends that have graduated from good schools with engineering and CS degrees who have applied to hundreds of jobs with minimal to no interviews. Candidates are lucky to even get an auto-rejection these days. So while Qualcomm may not be the first choice, maybe there is more of a possibility of landing there (albeit a small it sounds like) post-internship than applying to a company without any connection.

Why do you want to roll over into a company this toxic, knowing that you will be on a chopping board within a few years.

My suggestions to new grads, please try to find some smaller companies or some startup before joining Qualcomm. Qualcomm is a career ki-ler for everyone and particularly for younger people.
