Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

We should uniionize

Imagine how much power we'd have if we, across the tech industry, unionized.

It sure would throw the brakes on these giant LRs if we had some bargaining power.

It’s surprising to see anyone arguing against the ability to have a say in their own best economic interest. A seat at the table. For example what if you just moved from one state to another for a job at Cisco? I think you’d like to know that there is minimal risk for you. I know some who have left pretty great companies only to come to Cisco and get laid off. They could not have known that the business unit they joined had been unproductive for quite some time.

But in USA the anti union rhetoric gets thrown around and examples of a bad union boss as if that’s an argument. It’s not. It does not represent every union experience. In the end if workers are being used like pawns and their livelihoods are at stake constantly, wouldn’t it be nice to have protections around that? Of course!

Love the points about being able to hold the company to be more transparent and it’s great to see this has been successful in other countries and sectors.

Because we could fix things like our company not paying a fair wage across the globe. Imagine 80k people saying that cisco needs to fix the salaries in exploited nations.
`
I keep hearing this stereotype.
Just trying to imagine how exploited you would be if the jobs will sit entirely in US and each country would have enough "exploited" cisco employee to support the internal sales and to offer technical support.

I mean most of the cisco gear is produced outside US using exploited people who otherwise would do something else in their countries. I am convinced that if their countries would treat them fairer or better they won't chose to work for Cisco over there. So that is that.

So this leaves us without jobs here in US.
The software developement is also moved there after it got off the ground here
Also most of the masterminds behind the software we produce is either here in US or in Europe. We could develop the same software here but our employer decided to do it over there. Again the same reasoning applied. Go and work for your local employers or government and tell us if you feel exploited or not. We too feel we are robbed by our rightful right work in our country.

Question: do you want to go the China way? They thought they were key in the world economy. The western world is moving production to India, Vietnam and other countries. India is getting cheeky these days and it will soon enjoy the same treatment and as China, the production will move out of India and it will continue to move East.

China India and their BRICS friends can trade and work with each other till the end of the world, let see where that is taking them. So ...a honest "shut the f..... up!" and be happy with what you have. If you don't like it boycott Cisco and we will thank you for repatriating our jobs. At least you have them even if they are paid more or less to your liking. We don't have them at all!

Unions make money for union bosses, not workers.

Like HR, they are there for the employer, not the employee.

Since people asked, here is why a union is a good idea -

  1. Because 30 day waits between announcements and layoffs would become a thing of the past. Representation would fix this.
  2. Because we could fix things like our company not paying a fair wage across the globe. Imagine 80k people saying that cisco needs to fix the salaries in exploited nations.
  3. Because things like "changing your earned pto to unlimited vto" would never happen again. They'd have to come to the workers and ask. Compromise would be on the table.
  4. Because garbage like "using your pto for a mandatory shutdown" would be done away with.
  5. Because when LRs do happen, we could hold the ELT accountable to owning their end. Do they watch their travel instead of laying people off? Do they lay anyone off instead of shuffling the deck and keeping them on board? Do they enjoy a golden parachute that none of us get? Why shouldn't we make sure?

There's a million more reasons. Having a voice in our own future is important.

“ Everyone who works for Cisco is highly paid and well treated. I’m confused why we need a union lol”

Not necessarily true and even if it were, it’s still worth having representation, input and advice. There’s like no downside. We have one in my country and it led to LRs being more transparent and a set process behind decisions. And Lets employees get legal advice, though Cisco offer to cover the fees for external legal advice too.

Curious which union model you think is working well? Most small/mid union trusts are insolvent, or close to it.

UAW comes to mind. So much crust there now. Which is bound to happen with a socialist approach.

Interesting idea of what you reap is what you sow. Our HR ELT is a poli-sci major so that might come back to haunt her.
