Thread regarding ViacomCBS layoffs

So sorry, guys, this is happening to us

I wish us all luck. I hope all those laid off this round will land on their feet soon. To the rest, try not to be anxious and stressed about what’s coming. Our well-being is worth a million times more than any job and company. Things will turn around, eventually, and maybe losing this job may prove to be a blessing in disguise.

I got laid off during the pandemic, and yes I check in here now and again, especially now with the bad news.

For those getting let go, it su*ks for sure. So much admin bs to deal with along with all the feelings: anger, frustration, fear, failure. Let the pain happen because it will eventually pass, and become just a memory.

Layoffs are a sign of a company's weaknesses, not yours. Keep repeating that to yourself.

Know your worth as a professional. It's probably a lot more than you might think right now, certainly a lot more than whoever decided to cut you thinks. In the end, who cares what they think anyway.

Stay in touch with the colleagues who mattered to you. These will be the people who can put future opportunities in your path.

Put as much money away as you can for sh!tty times like these. Because they will happen again. No job is forever.

I'm treating the next six weeks like "quiet PTO" and doing the bare minimum. The disrespect, stress, and burnout this company has put me through is responsible for every gray hair on my head. If they're going to treat my livelihood like I'm an AI bot they are champing at the bit to replace us with, I'm not going to let them take anymore of my precious energy before they kick me out the door. I hope Shari gets sued into oblivion.

Is it too much to ask these days to find a job where you’re not under the constant threat of getting fired?

@hrx+1u22qoPF I feel the same way. Even before layoffs, at best felt disenchanted with this job. And now there’s no bottom to how disgusted I feel about being here. Resentment doesn’t even begin to describe it. Even if I don’t get fired, I don’t want to be here anymore. I’m actively looking.

How likely do you think SWE are going to get hit?

I appreciate this.

But like, I don’t want to be here. I am angry, bitter, and any passion I had for my job has been completely erased. Does everyone feel like this??

What do we do?

Spot on. As someone in streaming tech I just started applying to jobs and leetcoding/prepping for interviews in anticipation of sept. 24th.

Take time to exercise and eat well to help yourself maintain good mental health during this period. This is not the time for a tub of ice cream and self pity… layoff the doom scrolling. Schedule the job interviews you least want first, if possible, as practice for the better ones.

Everything will work out 💪

Best post I've seen - you're absolutely right -

Stop thinking that companies need to be loyal to their staff - once we know this - we know our worth. Not some company who is making people work 12+ hours on the VMA's only to let them go a week later.
