Thread regarding Amazon.com layoffs

I was excited to join Amazon until I saw the news on layoffs

New college grad here, I got an offer at Amazon for their software development team. But I’m seeing all these layoffs! And now that I found this page and it looks like a blood bath at Amazon!

Why the F would a company hire people if they’re doing mass layoffs?

Thanks. You guys convinced me not to buy any AMZN shares this year. Maybe they'll clean up their act in 2025! Hope so.

What's different now is that Andy is in charge and his management chain is different versus the past decades. Different operating environment too. Many of their qualified applicants aren't as qualified as they should be, and so there are too many low performers. Past layoff counts are good evidence.

OP: put yourself in Amazon management shoes who reports to investors ; they want want to bring over a pool of qualified applicants; then get the best out of them at the most competitive compensation package; and get rid of low performers and rinse and repeat the process; it’s just business and it has worked well for Amazon over decades

If reading this page made you anxious, don't read the pages for the other companies.

Also be careful if you join a team that's primary based in a different location than you are. You may get asked to relocate at some point and then go through the agony of finding yet another job in order to stay in your current location. A lot of nasty RTO mandates at Amazon. Oh, also frozen wages and zero performance-based RSU grants for senior Engineers (which is also nonsense - you get the same as a low performer for an exceeds rating).

Be careful what you sign. Amazon is now lowering comp levels on offers v.s. other companies like Meta. And the stock price has been flat - no 15% growth each year, zero refreshers. Better options out there.

Did you sign it?

Simple: incompetent management, plenty of fat to trim (replacing with cheaper labor), and zest for impressing shareholders using manipulated financials through silent layoffs etc. Plus the work life imbalance.
