Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Fired For Interviewing

So Monday I took the day off and spent it interviewing all day at a certain fund company downtown Denver. I went to lunch at La Merise with different people from there and while there was seen one of the directors from another team in my department who also happened to be having lunch there. We didn't say anything to each other but she must have known something was up because I was in a suit. I was fired this morning. They told me I violated confidentiality and took my badge and company card and walked me out. If I don't get this job so sc--wed. Be careful if your job hunting.

I don't believe this story is true but I also think there's nothing stopping them from terminating someone under at-will employment for doing it.

Very incorrect.

Yes, they can terminate you for no reason. But the moment they give a reason, in this case confidentiality, they open the door to arbitration and litigation, especially if you’re a protected class (age, race, gender).

Too many people hear “at will” and “right to work” and think they have no rights. This is inaccurate. However, any worker supporting “right to work” and anti-labor policies is a fool that needs an MRI. The data is solid for decades — companies do just fine in both union and non-union states, wages trend hire in union states and a strong labor force yields wages that do better. Giving corporations carte blanche only results in wages that don’t keep up with inflation and no difference in employment rate. And the worst combination of all is when governments subsidize profitable companies like ours.

The only way this could have happened is if you took a sick day. But even then, the process takes a couple of months with HR before you are terminated. Don't buy it. Don't even try to sell it here.

Nonsense.

If it happened, you should engage a lawyer. Termination would be illegal on multiple fronts.

I totally believe it. They can and will fire you if they know you are looking to leave and when you create an environment where people feel they need to stab their coworkers in the back to save their own a-s, this is what happens.
