If Tesla is hiring so many once again, what was the point of layoffs? I thought people were kicked out because we desperately needed to cut costs. If that is true, then please explain to me how are we going to pay for 800 new employees? Will more of us be laid off to pay for them?

To get rid of the underachievers and marginally skilled folks
Cut expensive heads and hire folks in that will work for less would be my guess. That’s what they have done for the longest time in the automotive industry dating back to before Tesla was a company.
First job I had out of college was at an auto part supplier. Got hired in right before a recession. When layoffs came the most expensive guy in the group was let go and I took over his work. I’ll bet I was paid 1/2 to 1/3 his salary.
