Identifying and Addressing Toxic Management During Layoffs

Recognizing a toxic manager is crucial for maintaining a healthy work environment.
Presented as an (acrostic) for facilitate easier memorization.

Five telltale signs to watch out for:

(E)xcessive Credit-taking and Blame-shifting: A toxic manager frequently takes credit for the team's accomplishments while deflecting any failures or mistakes onto team members. This behavior not only demoralizes employees but also erodes trust and respect within the team.

(T)endency to Micromanage: Micromanagement is a hallmark of a toxic manager. Instead of allowing team members to work independently, they oversee every detail, stifling creativity and causing frustration. This approach indicates a lack of trust in the team's abilities.

(I)nstigating Division: A toxic manager often creates a divisive atmosphere by pitting team members against each other. This tactic fosters competition rather than collaboration, undermining team cohesion and leading to a toxic work environment.

(P)oor Empathy: An empathetic manager understands and considers the personal and professional challenges of their team. In contrast, a toxic manager displays little to no empathy, disregarding employees' feelings and well-being, which can lead to decreased morale and increased stress.

(S)eldom Offering Help: A toxic manager rarely provides the necessary support or guidance to their team. Instead of empowering employees to succeed, they leave them to fend for themselves, leading to confusion, mistakes, and a lack of professional growth.

Yes this describes my manager and VP. It’s horrible. I am only staying as I need insurance!

Indeed, there appears to be no solution. The management at Optum is likened to having malignant cancers affecting all vital organs.

So identifying toxic management / leadership what are you going to do with this information? Like having a medical diagnosis but there is no known treatment.

Thank you for your input @OP+1tvL4gdT. Here is an additional tip to help identify a toxic work environment and problematic leadership:

(I)nstigating Drama: Because what's a workplace without a little chaos? A toxic manager loves to stir the pot, creating rifts among team members just for the fun of it. After all, nothing says "productive environment" like constant backstabbing and paranoia.

(T)yrannical Micromanagement: Who needs autonomy when your manager can breathe down your neck 24/7? A toxic manager ensures that every minor detail is scrutinized, leaving no room for creative thought or personal growth. Who doesn't love being treated like a toddler?

(S)pectacular Absenteeism: Need help or guidance? Good luck finding your manager. A toxic leader is usually too busy hiding in their office or mysteriously vanishing during crises. After all, solving problems and providing support is so overrated.

(S)upreme Lack of Empathy: Emotional support? Understanding? Forget about it. A toxic manager's idea of empathy is a blank stare or a condescending pat on the back. Why bother caring about your team’s well-being when you can just ignore their struggles entirely?

Through all the layoffs over the years, guess who UHG always keeps? The worst of the worst when it comes to toxic employees. The people who yell and treat people like lesser life forms. The people who have been reported to leadership repeatedly for their behavior. It’s repulsive.

Well that’s OPA’s senior leader in a nutshell! Having Dr before your name doesn’t give you the right to denigrate your own staff FYI
