Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Decided a while ago to not care about layoffs

Being laid off is something I can’t change. What I can do is to look after myself. I started looking for another job some time ago, and I discipline myself to do bare minimum and literally switch off everything toxic and aggressive at work. I always make sure that I have some savings squirreled away, which takes the pressure off. I don’t care if the company will survive, but I sure as he-l care about my own survival and being fit enough so that I can make the best out of circumstances and even enjoy life. So guys, just always do what’s best for you and learn to not pay attention to noise.

Home & Community PSC here.
Remote worker.
A little insight into whats been happening in our neck of the woods:

Optum seems to be promoting 'quiet firing' from the pre-service coordinator persoective (PSC reviewing auth requests from Acute, Home, etc to SNF).

Just a few weeks ago--
manager announced
'we have new goals for 2024.
theyve been updated.
Instead of 90% productivity goal, your goal is 100% productivity.'

'This, and 100% scores are still required for your 'quality audits' as well on all of your reviews.
(that didnt change--now, work faster and work perfectly, and dont use the restroom-no time).

The manager said
'I know this its not possible, but, hey dont stress too much, hey,
its just a goal. I dont think they really mean it. But I have to tell you.'

Oh, and I know its 6/21, but unfortunately this changed on 6/1--we decided to not tell you until 3 weeks into the change.

  • So- productivity averages started at the 100% expectation on 6/1

(despite the PSCs werent notified until around 6/21 of this change).

What this means-

  • when PSC's dont meet productivity-no bonus.
  • Will get l put on Corrective action plan (CAP).
  • dont get a 3/meets on annual review.

Before that--the previous 'flex time' ability that had been presented to PSC's in 2023 after the 'company survey' as 'we want happy employees--this job is flexible. We want employees to attend their kids baseball game' etc, 'we will try to always say yes to a flex request-hust make up time in the same week'....
Flex time option for PSC's was withdrawn per management (ie: to attend a dr appt, one could pre arrange to be gone 2 hrs and work 2 xtra hrs, or start early i stead of use PTO.)

Also-PTO has changed-only 1 PSC off per day per team. If someone gets a wed approved--one cant take that whole week off. Most days are already spoken for through end of December-so if one needs to go to a dr or dentist appt-one cant use PTO. Cant flex. Cant go to dr or dentist. (Esp if you work M-F, 8-5p)

Theyre hoping PSC's quit.
Or, trimming money from making it impossible to reach the annual goals--so no more chance of a bonus.
And-I believe theyre hoping to get ppl on corrective action plans-so they can terminate them &/or have them quit first-so to not have to pay severence.

QUIET FIRING. Its a thing.

Anyone else experienced this type of thing recently?

100% agree.
As a PSC--Ive given up so many luch hour & breaks-in orfer to 'try' to meet productivty. Continued to work off the clock after my work day ended.
I chose those things.
But, no more.
(I know of many others who have done the same. The culture encourages it. I shake my head as I consider how much Optum benefits from employees consistently donating unpaid time to them.

Good for you! I'm doing the same. Ridiculous directives every day from people deliberately telling us to do things they KNOW ARE WRONG.

I agree with everything you've written here. Although it's been difficult, I've tried to manage my anxieties about the layoff. When I do find another position, I've decided that I will never again invest as much time, energy, or personal sacrifices as I have made for this job. My family/friends deserve my energy not my employer.
