Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Optum Insight reorg

Major changes just announced for OI. No more domains, now just payer and provider. I imagine July 18 makes most sense for any layoffs.

Same as it ever was, in IT(SS), as well. The never-ending story of mismanagement and chaos. The company has been stuck in this dysfunctional cycle the past 4 years under the current "leaders." It's almost impressive how they manage to recycle the same outdated leadership tactics, treating everyone like kindergartners while they strut around with their inflated egos and zero real skills. Deep down, they know they’re out of their depth, and it shows in their insecurity.

It's amusing, in a tragic sort of way, to see how all the true knowledge and expertise "were retired" along with the lifers. Now, we have no depth on the bench, and it’s painfully obvious. Of course, investing in real talent is too costly, but somehow the company can afford the astronomical expenses of a major incident. Makes perfect sense.

The only skill left is managing up, because that’s what really matters for survival here. Being proactive? That's a surefire way to get a verbal beatdown. Got to embrace the role assigned to us - we're all just underlings. Treat us like a kindergartener? Fine, we will act the part. The ones with true skills remaining here, have turned it into a hobby, pushing said "leaders" to see how long it takes before they crack, before the musical chairs start again.

Respect here isn’t given; it’s a foreign concept. These "leaders" come in with fancy titles expecting instant respect, but they never earn it. So, sit back and enjoy the show, watching as the game board shifts yet again. Welcome to the circus.

The company always been this way nothing new and I am talking about all the way back to Ingenix days. A ton of lifers have retired and with that all the knowledge went with them. We have no depth on the bench and it shows since that costs too much but a major incident that is orders of magnitude more costly we can afford that. The only skill set that remains is managing up so that is what matters with individual survival. I learned a long time ago being proactive will get a good tongue lashing so I enjoy watching the train go off the tracks and a "leader" lose their sh-t. Been told I am just an underling so I will act accordingly. Treat me like a kindergartener and I will act like one. Just wait and the game board will shift. Just because one rotates in with a fancy title no instant respect is given it has to be earned. It is actually a hobby experimenting with how far i can go with some new "leader" putting them in their place. They are always gone after about 6 mos when the musical chairs starts yet again.

From what I have seen, Layoffs of Individual Contributors (IC) does not require a ReOrg. Layoffs of Directors and above usually is done with the smokescreen of a ReOrg. Unfortunately they sprinkle in a few IC (those who do the work) to make it look fair. I think stability in any organization for this generation has been exchanged for huge executive pay. The reason we were hacked I'm afraid, is that many have 'checked out' or been let go and in turn more inexperienced folks were asleep at the wheel waiting to be TOLD to do a task. That's a culture problem. A Culture problem that is being enhanced and ignored with each cut. What have we become?

I do recall layoff training is for the managers who will do the culling. rules of engagement etc for executing the process. Then the aftermath of notifying the ones in the same area that survived the action if there are any remaining. If you are outside of the affected area you will hear nothing as usual. Grapevine will be your source of news. Since going for new org structure again there may be some slide deck presented after the fact of where they plan to go. As usual it will be irrelevant since the rearranging will have begun again before the deck hits email. Honestly I really didnt know what business unit i worked for lately until i saw a new email signature block from someone in my group. Mine is about 3 restructures behind. Been doing the same job function for 10 years. If you been here long enough you have seen all the ideas at least once so they just cycle through like a washing machine thinking it will be different this time. Going back to the old pillars in OI gonna be alot of dir, VP etc hitting the street or at least they should and nobody will notice workflow wise

To sad nurse:
OI equals Optum insight. That is another business area in Optum.

You have to realize that Optum is three big orgs/businesses:
Optum Health
Optum Insight
Optum RX
Under the Optum Health Org umbrella you have many business units. Lots of those acquired.
Some fully integrated, some not.
This includes Home and Community. A very large org under Optum Health and which has HBMC (Home Based Medical Care) which was formerly LANDMARK. Care Transitions formerly NaviHealth and Housecalls.
HBMC, along with FPM (full population management), are considered Optum at Home.

Again, Home and Community is an org under the Optum Health umbrella- both Optum Health at large and Home and Community (and may other orgs like ECS, or enterprise clinical services, which is largely centralized telephonic care management programs for internal and external clients and programs).

The rumors about potential layoffs for HBMC/Landmark (which is part of Home and Community which is under Optum Health) is disheartening.
I have no idea why everyone is working from home those days and why that meeting was set up. The only people that know are senior leaders. It might be exactly what everyone thinks but it also might not be. I know it su-ks to not know for sure.

But the 100% reality is that at Optum- no matter your roll- like at many other large, for-profit corporations- change is constant. Layoffs are the norm.

You should always have a layoff plan while working here. Sure you could be like some and stay for 15, 20 even 30 years but that isn’t typical. And everyone is at risk for layoffs. Every single one of us.
I know it su-ks to come to this realization, especially for those that were brought in as an acquisition (which, by the way, acquisitions almost ALWAYS lead to major layoffs) or just from healthcare delivery orgs like hospitals where it’s not like this. This is a shocking reality.

The ugly side of healthcare being a for profit, capitalistic venture.

But the sooner you accept this as the factual reality the sooner you will start making moves that make you feel more secure- whether that is apply elsewhere, have a layoff savings fund, both…etc.

The changes mean that instead of administrative solutions, clinical solutions, software network and data, and enterprise imaging, it will just be 2 businesses in Optum Insight. Payer and Provider.

What does that all mean for the clinics? I'm not familiar with the terminology being used in this post. Clinics will be closed on the 18th and we all have to attend this mandatory meeting FROM HOME. It's nerve wrecking to think about it and even worse when some of us don't know what you're so talking about. I'm a clinic nurse in Tampa Florida. If anyone has any solid insight on what's happening with the clinics, please let us know. I almost cried today when my patients were leaving, thinking I'd never see them again

"All of OI is being re-org back to market pillars, Payer products vs Provider Products. Expect 500-1000 lay offs. 7/18 and 8/1. Org structure will come out after that. Layoff training has started"....

What is "layoff training?"
