Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Fear has no place in management and leadership.

If anyone uses fear as a strategy to get their people to work, that person has no business leading or managing anyone.

For full disclosure, I am a retired manage. I was a conductor and engineer before becoming a manager for 20 years. I monitor this site because I still have friends, both union and management, still working for UP. I wish the best for everyone still employed with the uncertainty surrounding PSR.

Fear and retaliation. That’s the only thing they know.

Agreed, fear shouldn’t be used as a management tactic. But you’re living in Lala land my man. UP not only desires managers like that but tends to promote them up the ladder.

As the industry constantly evolves, the management now has to evolve as well. For years, the management at the UP has operated on fear to get the results they wanted. Now, it's the only tactic they have left available to them to keep the upper management from looking in their direction. The lower management was protected by those under them. Those under them are no longer there to take the heat. The fear tactic is no longer working for those that are still left, because the ones that are left are now leaving. I didn't know of very many managers there that could actually do the work either. OOPS, I guess they never thought of that. So let's scare the remaining people into getting what they want so they can look good to their supervisor. What the UP should do is take every manager they have, and have them physically do the same work they're in charge of. If they can't do the work as good or better than the folks they're in charge of, then I would say it's bye bye to them. No manager should be in their position if they can't physically do the same work of the people they manage. The lower management needs to be doing something else other than sitting in an office barking at people from a telephone. I think it's time for the management side to experience a little fear now.

Only ones that are. Living in fear are the low level managers. Their the ones doctoring up the numbers to make it look like their doing great. It always catches up to them.
