It’s a business probably close second to funeral homes in terms of the never-ending stream of customers and the potential for profit margin. I think this case requires a scientific study.

You can already run your own pharmacy franchise with Good Neighbor Pharmacy (4k member pharmacies). No reason Walgreens should copy something that already exists in a large scale and isn't wildly successful.
Should there be a front end? A: No front end. Stores in the current format need to go. Set up little pharmacies as franchises to dispense prescription medication.
Should there be less stores? A: there should be no corporate owned stores.
Should there be 24 hour stores? A: no. emergency pharmacies maybe, affiliated to ERs.
How should the pharmacy operate (staffing, systems, process, lines, drive-thru, management structure, etc.)? A: As pharmacist owned franchises. Corporate should only be preoccupied with the health of the franchise business, not the store operations.
How should corporate, districts, etc. operate? Management structure? A: very small corporate footprint (less than 500 employees), more like Berkshire Hathaway.
How would you do it differently?

I disagree - the industry is doing poorly in general. Look at Rite Aid going bankrupt.
Don’t get me wrong though. WBA culture is poisonous, management is incompetent, and the ship seems to be sinking to a well-deserved watery grave. It’s just that they had some help from mediocre industry conditions.
For sure this will be a historic showcase in business classes for generations to come.
