I’m in no position now to be laid off. Too much debt, dependants at home, cost of living through the roof. Given the job mkt, I don’t expect to land another job in quite a while. I'm a dedicated hard worker and fully aware that it doesn’t make any difference. Why does all this have to be so stressful and difficult?

The last poster has a point. Trust your gut. I do believe that this the work culture that UHG wants employees to have. To constantly be wondering if this is their last week. Will they be next. Is there anything they can do to change their fate? Work harder? Put in extra hours? Do extra presentations? Just keep you happy to have a job.
Start looking for a job now. If you're in a state or department that has lost contracts; your workload has been reduced; or there have been rumors of your position being laid off, take action now. You do not have to be a victim of circumstance.
Applying and interviewing does not mean you have to accept the position if offered. But it will give you a better idea of what the job market is like for someone with your background and experience. It'll also help you feel more in control. You never know...you make get a better offer!
