Thread regarding Micron Technology Inc. layoffs

Relocation package

I am not sure if this is the best place to ask this question as most people on here are a little pessimistic.

But here goes.

If you worked at Micron and were relocated to Boise, what was the relocation package like? Did they pay for everything? Selling costs, realtor costs, etc?

I used to work for a major oil company, and their relocation package was awesome. Both time I relocated with them, I actually made money on the move. I am just trying to get a feel for MIcron.

there will be another round of large layoffs at micron when the stock market bubble pops
micron produces a luxury item not a necessary item

Micron is NOT reliable.
Think of Micron more of as like a corrupt government.
There are some good people here and there but the system is awful.
It may brag about its patents but they are window dressing.
Sadly, the way you find out about this is when you start working there and it is too late.

Another way to look at the job position. Again, due to the change in ceo. If you are DEI you will be highly rated for that alone and not necessarily your ability to perform the position. From your response about layoff’s and lower performers being let go is not the way micron does it anymore. In our group everyone that was laid off last year were greater than 50 yrs old and all male. DEI was not considered unless absolutely necessary. Over the last couple of years hiring managers would only be provided, from HR, applicants that were DEI. If none applied then the position would be held until there was. Again not necessarily the best applicant for the job. You might have been lucky to have your application sent to the hiring manager or maybe your timing was good.

Don’t move to Boise. There are very very few jobs. You will likely be unhappy and trapped at Micron or layed off and forced to move again.

You might be entering micron at a time when they need USA construction knowledgeable people. MBA for micron is really closer to the bottom end. F4 Boise is currently R&D so engineering is upper end. ID1 will be mfging but still Eng are more sought after. You should have had Marcos in your panel. He is a good person comes for old fab 1,1X, 2. He worked in the CVD area. The company made a big change in upper mgt when Mark D left. Of course the loss of Steve A. was/is very sad. He was a very good person/leader. You won’t find that now. Good luck on job interview.

I am not a PhD level. My job function would be more related to the construction going on at Boise. But I do have an MBA and about 20 years experience. It is a senior manager position. I was interviewed by the recruiter, hiring manager and I just had a panel interview yesterday. Everything felt good, but no offer yet. I guess I will just wait and see what happens. i might not get an offer anyway. I get they lay off every few years, but I used to work in Oil and Gas, that industry is similar, they have layoffs every 3 or 4 years. My experience has been the low performing employees get let go. (I do not consider myself one of those employees)

I am familiar with Boise, my wife grew up in Idaho, which is part of what attracted me to Micron in the first place.

There are a few other larger employers in the Boise area (Albertsons, Simplot, HP) What I do can be utilized in multiple industries. Not just the semiconductor industry.

Not too sure about your timing. Micron was building a fab in Lehi. Brought people in to Boise for 9 months of training. Once again layoff’s. Told them to pack their bags and go back. The fab in Lehi was mothballed for several years before they could get intel to invest and complete the fab. Best bet is to save your dignity and find a company with a better history treating their employees.

You really didn’t provide any background on what position level you would be. Do you have your PhD? Lower on the food chain the package drops fast. Depending if you are a new college grad. I believe that they are just giving you a lump sum and calling it good. They don’t want to hassle with all the logistics. You’re on your own to set up your move. You might be able to pocket some money. Boise was rated the top place to move/retire to in the USA about five years ago. This was not due to micron. Now the area is ruined with the onslaught and what it brings with it. Check out the cost of living and crime before you sign a contract. Also note micron has a clear track record of laying off every 3 years since the company started. A while back when I was hired on it was just after a 50% layoff. Micron just had a layoff a year ago. I think it was a 25% layoff.

if Micron lets you go in Boise, you are sc--wed
which is a very real chance
they have some sort of dream of moving partially to india for cheap labor
there is no other tech in Boise
also the housing is way over priced
the relocation package was fine but that may be the carrot to get you to got to Boise
