Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Things to consider from a practical standpoint

If you think there’s any chance you’ll be laid off:

  1. If you haven’t taken your floating holiday, do so now
  2. Depending on what state you live in, you may or may not get full PTO payout (just do some research to avoid the surprise).
  3. Boost your 401k percentage now if you’re contributing and want to max it out this year
  4. If you do “get the call”, be professional (if you want that severance!) and confirm verbally that you’re eligible for rehire (not that you’d come back, just so if a future employer were to call)
  5. Take advantage of any of those LinkedIn Learning classes ASAP

I only post this because I still have friends internally (yes I got the call and I’m out) and in my mind it’s important to be constructive and prepared without doing too much of the endless “what if” doomscrolling that sometimes happens. My last comment is to be thoughtful of who you speak to internally about layoffs - it’s not always helpful and can be construed as negative by peers and managers (I love me some predictions but it never got me a promotion lol)

I worked with some outstanding people during my tenure at Optum, but none of them were in my management - that was some hunger games s**t there!

Do you know how soon they notify fidelity that you're not active employed so we can move the funds?

The severance policy is on Sparq.

Does Optum follow the UHG severance policy (we do have some different policies)? I’ve heard conflicting information. Or where can we find the allowed severance based on our employment years if it’s different from UHG’s policy?

In MT and CA, they have to cash out all PTO. I had 600 hrs built up when I left a few years ago.

How much notice does Optum give for lay offs?

Excellent advice. I left on my own but did all this to be sure I got the max. The most a prospective employer can confirm is that you are or are not eligible for rehire. Line up some good references among co workers or even a manager that know your work and your strengths. UHG/Optum is not too big to fail, especially in light of some of the cr-p they have pulled the last 5 years.

Renew any licenses asap so it's on their dime

If you have over 40 hours of PTO you only get 40. You do not get anything over 40. Floating holidays are out.
