GM self-driving unit Cruise names new CEO as it seeks turnaround

General Motors robotaxi unit Cruise said on Tuesday it has named a former xBox founding engineer as the new CEO of U.S. automaker's troubled self-driving vehicle company.

Marc Whitten will take over as chief executive on July 16, Cruise announced. Cruise has had two co-presidents running the company since Kyle Vogt resigned as CEO last year amid the fallout after an accident involving one of its driverless vehicles in California. Both of those co-presidents will remain at Cruise.

If there ever is a true self driving car, the manufacturer will be responsible for insurance issues, because their car is totally in control and the rider is just a passenger.

But we're nowhere near that right now.

With the current driver assistance systems, the human driver is still responsible.

If you are behind the wheel, you are charged with manslaughter (or worse) regardless of your car's features.
"But my car has ultracruise (or some other feature)" won't stop civil or criminal courts from getting revenge on you when your car maims or k1lls someone.
You own the car. You are resonsible for its maintenance and operation.

When one of these "self driving" cars ki-ls someone, who's going to be held liable? The driver? The manufacturer? The guy with the last commit in the source code?

"Bought Cruise & laid off in 2019 are huge mistakes in GM history. Cruise and Waymo, etc. will never succeed because of the methods they are using."

they are investor scams
you might as well make them controlled fusion companies
who was asking for self-driving cars anyway
i would like to see a cure for cancer maybe or something like that

"Teslas aren't self driving. Can't take your hands off the wheel."

Awkward. So many here guilty of guessing with authority.
Here's a video demonstrated a fully self-driving Tesla 5 years ago. "Look mom, no hands!"

I hope GM spends more hundreds of millions more on self driving cars and ends up with nothing to show for it. Keep up the good work, id--ts.

Bought Cruise & laid off in 2019 are huge mistakes in GM history. Cruise and Waymo, etc. will never succeed because of the methods they are using. Stay away those start-up companies to avoid the blooding if OEMs really want AV.

"GM is sc--wed without me."
"I paid my dues. Someone else will get cut."
"I'm a woman, they can't get rid of me."
"Sally never comes in but she does a really good job. She is safe."

Reality check is in the mail.

Oh for gods sake we’re talking about a ceo who perpetually tells us lies about objectives and a company that hides the truth (data) initially from investigators. Cruise was remote controlled most of time.

GM can’t do it, MB knows it, she’s just biding her time and collecting millions before her next gig.

Again, finish your projects ASAP and fully document everything so the off shore or near shore can take over.

That is all
