Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Why are all of Michael Dell’s company talks so scripted?

As a Dell employee that’s fairly new (2 years), I find it odd that every time Michael Dell does an all hands meeting for the entire company he just reads a script and it sounds totally fake.

You’d expect him to have more confidence.

Even when he’s just reading a speech that someone else wrote, he comes off as uninteresting and bland.

And why are all the incoming questions in Dell company wide all hands meetings pre-screened? Why are Michael Dell and his direct executive team so afraid of open communication with staff?

because there's little desire or interest in actually connecting with the audience or offer a heartfelt, natural response to a question, so pre-screen them and have a prepped answer

Those annual all hands calls are funny to watch! It’s kinda sad how bad they’ve gotten.

Michael Dell and his direct reports have spent a small fortune over the years on media training and it shows when they all talk.

It’s like they don’t really even care to review the fake call after stitching the pre-recorded video speeches. Everybody uses the same hand movements, the same sentence pausing, and both Michael Dell and Jeff Clarke use the same makeup mosaic powder when they do public speaking.

All the expensive media training is not going to magically erase the social anxiety and public speaking issues these clowns have.

They don’t do live questions because Dell employees are watching a video that’s been edited quite a bit before they hit the play button on the call. It’s not an actual live talk with employees.

Dell is worried on layoff and no proper org structure in Bangalore and globally. In Bangalore everyone is confused as every 2 weeks people are moved into different teams , managers shout ladies and gents in same tone no disrespect and everything is ok to dell

It’s all scripted and pre-recorded. It’s all story. The best thing Michael is good at is market manipulation and relationships. That’s all Dell is doing now and has been doing for the past 15 years. There will always be a need for infrastructure but Dell isn’t doing anything inventive. You saw the numbers, we aren’t even leading in the space anymore.

It's possible to be good in one area and horrible in another. Jordan wasn't great at baseball. Mike Tyson isn't a great ballet dancer.

Dell is one of greatest commodity hardware pushers. He isn't great at public speaking.

The del worshipers believe he is God in the flesh and perfect with no weakness. It's that bizarre of a cult.

Oh my. I’m not going to defend Michael. He has always been a terrible speech-giver. Much better off-the-cuff. Not a good stage presence giving canned speeches. My goodness, he is light years better than he was in the 90s. I hadn’t thought of his hair, but I don’t really care about that. And he’s not 70, my goodness, I think he’s only 59, maybe 60 now?

I only wish he could truly commit to invest in reinventing his company, instead of doubling down on cost cutting. No company ever cost reduced their way to success.

Honestly. Wtf?

Plus, a 70 year old guy with well kept gray hair looks a whole lot better than a guy that’s trying to con others with hair that’s darker than it was when he was 30.

I’d suggest that MSD is smarter than anybody commenting here. Which is why he doesn’t need to follow a site like this like a nervous rat waiting to be made redundant.

And what’s up with all that black hair dye??

I don’t understand why an old, out of shape dude dyes his hair in the first place. Like dude ain’t nobody looking to hook up bro. Just shave your head or something.

He absolutely has confidence and skill in this area. Have seen him many times talk off the cuff.

He is also the major shareholder in a few multibillion dollar companies. You have seen what happens when a tiny comment is made the wrong way by other major stakeholders in companies like Apple, Telsa, Facebook etc etc. He is protecting the staff and shareholders. Smart move to ensure on message comms.

Try listening to any of Michael Dell’s speeches at tech conferences. It’s like an hour-long Dell infomercial with no original ideas. You can see people get up and walk out.
