Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

How hard is it to get from G9 to G10 ?

I've been in G9 for several years. My manager keeps pushing it down the road. How long has it taken for anyone here to get to G10 ?
I am worried if that can be held against me for the ISP

I have been a 9 for 10 years , promised ‘next time’ at least 4 times - but reorgs and management changes mean those promises never came …. Thanks and good night , I’m out this time :)

Promotions at Intel su-k! I joined with over 10 years of experience as G7! (which was $hit!) I became a G8 after 2 years of service. I have been G8 for over 90 months! Not waiting for any promotions for a while now and I am performing just enough to get by. This place breaks any motivated employee over time.

The people i know were stuck at G9 for years… more than 5 but less than 8 years. The nudge across to get to G10 required endorsement/sponsor by their managers. If yours is not even supportive its a sign they will not go ask for it because chances are they are a G10 and do not want you to move up.

I retired at G8, my CV contained only a couple of international presentations, no patents and I wasn’t diverse enough. Moving from IC to People Manager was the worst move that I made. I spent 32 productive years at Intel and was happy to retire at 56. Chase the dream, if that’s your goal.

Already posted on this thread, but will say that most organizations have a list of people they want to fast track for promotion. This list is heavily DEI weighted or weighted by other factors like background nationality. I hate saying this but it true. If your not on this list most likely not going to happen.

In the past Grade 10 and above are very political positions. They create this positions for political reasons. I was a grade 9 for many years, busted my a-s, huge influence across organizations but my org did not want a grade 10s. But times changed and orgs changed, this suddenly created the need for the political clout of a grade 10, presto chango I am a grade 10. Probably half are more of the grade 10s today are created for DEI reasons. It is actually hard to be a grade 10 and above and get things done, there is an expectation that you are going to drink the koolaid and become part of the group think. Almost every time I give someone negative feedback on their work, output especially if a DEI, managements gets quite upset with me.

If you have a long Time In Grade it is absolutely held against you and increases your chances of getting an ISP.

That said, Intel will layoff a higher % mix of G10s than G9s because G10s cost so much more.

I was stuck at g7 for just over 5yrs. Switching teams put me constantly at the bottom of the politics list even if I was a top performer. Left to apple. Got multiple offers in the past year for g10 to come back to Foundry. Almost took the bait in January. I have a soft spot for Intel and really want them to succeed. But boy am I happy to be at Apple right now.

Why go higher ? More A/Rs and staff issues to come ! The Intel mountain just got Half Dome steeper !
Focus on Ai foundry projects only !

Your real promotion is landing a job offer at NVDA, AMD, QCOM or AAPL.

Time in grade is a big deal, the longer it is, higher the probability of ISP.

I agree with @kvk.
@OP - G10 and above are high paid grades and tough to get to for a reason. They make it very hard and once you do get there, you can be an easy target for layoff
