Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Returning?

A few laid off told me they hope on coming back. That is, lay back for a while and hope things pick up at dell so they can get rehired.

That is the strangest strategy I have ever heard.
It's not like Dell is such a great company and has a flowering future.

I think this is called bargaining?

I did that, a decade ago. Came back to a lower grade with same salary and much easier work. At that time, hire-fire-hire was the cycle. I know multiple folks also came back. Austin wasn't a strong job market, remote jobs are hard to come by. Most folks have a network at Dell and the managers preferred someone with Dell language. However, this time around, I don't think that is an option for most folks. There has been very limited external hiring for the last 2 years and every aggressive hiring for fresh undergrad, grad and early in career talent to replace the more experienced team members.

I did that 5 years ago. Huge mistake. The only thing worse than getting laid off from Dell is going back for another go round.

You bridge in for tenure/benefits - your salary/job grade is based on whatever job you applied for.

Usually, you'll have to pay back severance if you rejoin "too soon" according to HR

Not sure if it's changed or not, but used to be that if you came back within a certain period (9 months?) you were bridged in at previous salary and job grade. Not bad, depending on where you were in career and life circumstances. Worked out for me a good while back (some clawback on severance) because I had a full house to support at the time.
