Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

New hires at the same time as 12,500 laid off.

I've seen posts from about 15 or so people on my LinkedIn feed since August 5th announcing their undesired departure from Dell and all are seeking employment. The majority were in sales, but there were a few from engineering, sales, etc.

At the same time I've seen four announcements of people STARTING new positions at Dell. I can't tell if these are promotions or new hires, but the wording in the posts indicate they are new hires. Two appeared to be mid-level ISR management positions, one was a director level sales management position and the most recent one was an "SVP and GM Americas Medium Business."

I am only one data point and do not have a college business management degree, but it seems these four positions could have been filled by four of the 12,500 laid off or slated for layoff.

They have to keep hiring to reduce average age. When I started working at Dell in 1998 I was in my early 30's and was one of the oldest on the marketing team. There are now too many highly paid 50+ year old employees in company. Its a known fact once you hit a certain age you are targeted sometimes mostly to skill but mostly due to your high cost. Bring in 20 year olds, train them, and do that at half the price.

Some jobs become obsolete and others become necessary and may not have existed previously. Those who only do obsolete roles are removed and replaced with people who know the new role. I know several people who say "but I've been doing this job for 30 years" ...yeah, telephone operators used to have jobs too and we used to print phone books. Nobody needs wagon wheels replaced anymore and if that's all you do, it's time for you to go.

They shuffle them from other teams and positions as others exit - not new hires.
