Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Farewell Dell

After having the green light from my lawyer today I accepted the package. Not a bad deal at all, I can easily do a 2.5 year with no work and keep spending the same. They offered me a 6 month gardening leave, fully paid and I can keep my company car till end of January. Lawyer wasn't able to extend with one extra month extra to be able to vest my remaining stock options, but the package is pretty much compensating this anyhow. Time for a change (21 yrs. at Dell, Public Sales, Germany)

It’s a trade-off. A certain amount of security for some amount of opportunity. My European colleagues have always been stunned by the standard of living in the US for equivalent positions. They usually argue, however, that they don’t care about material things like cars and homes and other luxuries. It’s a matter of cultural preferences. Silly to fight over it.

The last „standard“ package from Dell in Germany under VSP was 1.8 x years of service + 4 months on top of that. You also get your notice period as a garden leave which is half a year for this guy. There is a cap you can get as a maximum now which is like 350k or so.
OP I was told that there are no vsp offerings at the moment - irgendwelche Tipps wie man mit Abfindung jetzt raus kommt?

Tech salaries all over western Europe are fairly pathetic

Seems like US employees are realizing how well European Democratic Socialism policies are. In most cases, you get 6 weeks for every year worked and 100% of bonuses and LTIs. You also get several months notice so you can look for a new job, while still employed and collecting a paycheck from the company that laid you off. The government also pitches in something like 2 weeks per year on top of that.

Throw in the other things like not having to enter time or even reporting what you work on each day/week and the company having to pay for 100% of all home office supplies and bills. They don't even have to do the work that is assigned to them if they don't want to and they get to pick their job titles etc and you can't change them as a manager without the employees agreement and permission.

In Europe, esp. France, Germany, Netherlands, Scandinavia, Switzerland, employees are well protected by law. So Dell can't lay-off people easily unless they 'voluntairly' agree on a package, the VSP. This comes at a price of course. The older you are, the longer you worked at the company, the higher the price.

On top, most countries, even if op paper it is voluntary, you are entitled to get unemployment payments for months to years,

US based people always find ~50%(+) income tax, and mandatory social fees, reducul. But this is what you get in return, a well organized safetynet protected by government.

That's what most Europeans believe a goverment is for, to protect its citizens and workforce.

I don't understand.

You got 6 months severance and a car till January?

That's a victory?

Good for you ! Good Luck !

Each package can be different in different areas. The US has poor worker protection against corporations.

In Europe Dell certainly does company cars, many, many are driving one. You can chose either a car or a car llowamce equal to the lease budget.

have you reached 25-years at dell - you'd have not be eligible to be fired based on German law
