Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

Why dont you break free from this “you are next” game?

I've been wondering why employees endure this "Squid Game" level of stress every quarter or six months. What's holding them back from exploring other opportunities in the job market? Is there some sort of contractual obligation preventing them from leaving or joining certain companies? it could be different regional wise.

I believe Teradata employees should start exploring the market, take a chance, and learn new skills. It's got to be better than feeling like you're dying every day.

Having the keyword Teradata on your CV is akin to saying you've spent 10 years in San Quentin. It makes potential employers run the other way.

For the technical people or those that want to become technical:

Learn python and become proficient with Pandas.
Learn Snowflake and Databricks.
Learn AWS and Azure cloud functionality.
Your Teradata SQL skills (if you use SQL) are a definite plus; get better at it if you are not super proficient.

Do mock presentations to yourself for all of the above until you are comfortable with the subject matter and delivering the content.

That is how I would prepare. That is where the money is.

Because I seriously don’t know where to go. I would be completely irrelevant elsewhere. For 25 years, I have been employed by “the 17 years in a row undisputed Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader for Data Management and Analytics” . Ha ha ! Why does the job market laugh at me? What is making this happen and how is this always happening to me and talking of myself only ? :-)

Job market is pretty grim right now. Unfortunately the same caliber of incompetent leadership shamelessly running TD into the ground has also run the economy into the ground.

Learn how to read the room and educate yourself about the economy and job market before judging employees how they are not doing enough to elevate their careers elsewhere.

Market is sh---y, a couple of colleagues of mine who were let go early this year, still haven't landed a good opportunity and are making-do with some contract gigs that doesn't even account for a couple of weeks' pay. Yes, good to be prepared, but unless there is resurgence in economy or we relocate to a low cost market (Poland, India, Czech etc.) the probability of landing a job right away is very low. The market according to some folks in India is also turning sh---y with layoffs even in companies like infosys / Tata etc. Overall the world seems to be in a fcked up position right now.

Yes at least brush up your resume - practice your interview skills - be prepped. Having said that it can take a long time to find another position as the market is saturated with tons of good candidates - businesses are in a holding pattern - interest rate environment is elevated - it's an election year - huge competition for WFH/Remote jobs - more and more companies hiring nearshore/offshore. Lots of fake jobs posted out there too.

It's a really tough battle out there since last year till this very point and still is - in fact things lately have gotten worse. 15k from Intel, 12k from Dell and how 4k from Cisco laid off really really adds to the talent of pool of folks looking for jobs in an already tough market in Tech.

And not just the shrinking job market. Having Teradud on your resume isn’t exactly in demand. If you were still here a year ago, that was already too late. I just have 18 months until retirement so I’ll be fine. I wish the rest of our walking dead good luck.

You must be really tone deaf or not American. Considering the fact that it’s extremely difficult to find a job and we are on the brink of a recession.
