Akron Paladin Attachments facility closing; 77 workers facing layoffs

Epiroc Industrial Tools and Attachments LLC is closing its Paladin Attachments manufacturing facility in Akron and laying off 77 workers there, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice that the Ohio Department Of Job and Family Services posted last week.

The layoffs at the 820 Glaser Parkway facility will occur within 14 days of Sept. 30, according to a letter Epiroc sent to Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and the Ohio Office of Workforce Development in July.

The Beacon Journal could not immediately reach company executives for comment.

Sweden-based Epiroc works in the infrastructure, mining and natural resources industries and has operations across the world, according to its website.

The letter sent to Malik and the Office of Workforce Development cites company restructuring as the reason for the facility closure and layoffs. In April, Epiroc completed the acquisition of Stanley Infrastructure, which includes the Paladin brand.

Layoffs "are expected to be permanent," per the letter, and laid off employees will not have bumping rights, meaning they will not be able to take the positions of others who are laid off.
