Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

Here’s looking at you, kid

Watching a company slowly but steadily implode. Here's why:

  • Many of the key leaders under the execs are a toxic cancer cell with delusions of grandeur and a history of abusing people, but coddled because ??
  • Mission creep. In too many things.
  • No core purpose or story that all the employees believe in. No north star.
  • The business is about the core leadership and enriching them. No plan to enrich the people.
  • Has been bleeding talent for years, yet doesn't make the adjustments to stem the flow.
  • Boring culture that is tolerant of empty complaints that aren’t constructive. No exciting personalities around to keep the energy level high and the bar high.

And the worst? Allowing C players to stay vs pushing them out and not fighting for A players to stay. People wanna know their colleagues are amazing. Allow weak talent to hang around? You’ll be amazed by how uninterested superstars are in working with weak people. Only as strong as your weakest link.

So don't do/be/allow ANY of this and you at least have a fighting chance because we are beating ourselves by not adapting.

Devon is a very strange place. Managers with maybe 10 yrs experience who have previously worked 1 or 2 areas, all in the US. They get very offended when you have more experience or know more than they do.

Devon middle leaders are special….choosing an approach that results in an environment where schadenfreude is one of the few sources of joy existing when their laughable decisions blow up in their faces. I’ve never seen anything like it.
