Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

It feels like it's not over yet

I don't think I'll be able to relax before the weekend.

on our team call I was told everyone that will be affected on my team has been notified, so we're safe (for now). CSG group in USA... my manager mentioned he didn't get word until last Friday so he was pretty blindsided himself so not sure how much stock I put into were safe for now...

You are right! I got the 1x1 invite in the middle of Sept. last year. There has been a constant slow trickle of RIFs for the past 2 years. And before any jerk asks why I'm still here if I was laid off 10 months ago. It is because I still have friends and people I care about at Dell and want to pulse check on the current situation.

What is different in the past couple of years, is that a great performance review and hitting all your metrics/KPIs no longer matters. Many years ago if there was a rumor of impending layoffs, you could predict who it would be. It was the person on the team that never hit their number, the wise guy with a bad attitude that was always late and never finished their projects on time. You knew where you stood, if you were in the top half of your stack-ranked team, you didn't need to worry. Now, the formula has changed, no one is safe.

You should never relax if you work for someone else, especially a large company. The best job security is to always be looking for the next opportunity. Build a good network of contacts, keep your resume updated and be willing to move to a new challenge.

It’ll likely be a continuous “sword of Damocles” hanging over every employee’s head until they find new jobs.
