“Upside down” org structure = Upside Down Organization

I remember the day I heard Rob “Golden Parachute” B. proclaim the “VALUE” of the “upside down tree structure” of the org. I wish I would have understood this meant that the organization itself was upside down, buried in bureaucracy and unable to serve its customers. Sponsoring the New York Yankees for millions while cutting staff at the same time.

Leaving Coupa allowed me to stop drinking the Kool-Aid and see the all the ways the company was “upside down”. I hope you all still working there will be so fortunate to see gross negligence of this sinking ship.

Rob’s era surfed on a wave of opportunity when the rest of the market hadn’t caught up yet. He then mismanaged Coupa, kept nepo-leaders in charge, stifled innovation, and then left with his $17m golden parachute.

Rob's era created an amazing company and culture by all measures. It was envy'd across the valley. PE super quickly destroyed it top down and bottom up.
