Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Not able to relax

Layoffs are bad in themselves, but the current state of the job market is making everything seem so much scarier. There are not many jobs available and it appears that a good part of those that are available don't pay even close to what I make now. To say that this is stressing me out would be an understatement.

The constant comments about “Dell doesn’t pay” - as an ex Dell employee, I can tell you, Dell pays very well for the types of skills they primarily hire. If you are comparing yourself to Silicon Valley or AI software skills, you are right - Dell doesn’t pay like that. If you actually have skills in those areas and have been working for Dell…why?

LOL I guess with all of the layoff rumors coming to a fever pitch next week, a bunch of the trolls came out. I've been at Dell 5 years, when I joined the pay was competitive for a mid candidate in SWE. Before I got another internal role inside, I was severely behind/out of pay band. After swapping, I'm now 20-30k over what headhunters are offering (but I have to go in now smh). Dell is fine, but sitting in one spot anywhere will stagnate your pay

Dell like many other tech behemoths long ago realized there is no money to be made in being exceptional. They will cut corners at anyplace they can to save costs as long as they maintain the impression (ruse) of striving for exceptionalism and innovation. This is the reason why in the upcoming weeks there are many exceptional people working at mediocre companies like Dell who are going to be shown the door because of costs, regardless of the value and revenue they generate.

"It's not a bad place to work when compared to industry averages "

This sounds like hard coping. I had to have SVP approval for a Sublime editor license.

Like everything else Dell does, they try to target and be at and industry averages. This includes not only pay, but overall quality, and employee satisfaction. It's not a bad place to work when compared to industry averages but it just doesn't standout in any particular area. It's always been like this.

Most posters here have almost invariably reported a new job with much higher pay.

Dell grossly underpays and becomes disconnected to real world salaries quickly year over year. So I would surmise you will most likely get a better paying gig if not the same.

Su-ks to seem like you are going backwards taking a job that is paying you less than your previous job but in getting laid off, you have already gone directly to jail. At this point you are looking for the get out of jail for free card.

Gigs are out there probably just not at what you were making before you got laid off. Issue is that many folks have the attitude in their post lay off job search that they won't take a job which involves a pay cut from their previous job. You should look at it as you will be making
zero after getting laid off so any decent paying gig at a reputable company is a pay raise.

@fjm+1tP6fsw7 : Cnn had another article " why inflation is a good thing". This network has done historically election propaganda instead of journalism.
If you believe in cnn brainwashing, you deserve what you get.

"Dell isn’t a great company."

Understatement. One of the worst in pay and environment. It's very easy to lose view of the real world if you spend years at dell.

At the end of the day Dell isn’t a great company. Either way, you want out.

As with everything, you'll have dips and highs. This may be a dip.
A lot of companies are reporting well. I think what we are seeing now are election volatility.

If you have savings you should be fine.Survive the dips to ride the next wave up.

Tried to apply for a few data center technician jobs, thought was yes lower pay but health benefits and relatively low stress environment with my many years of being a field technician with lots of certs. I was not hired and what I think was that my resume showed how old I was by listing my years of experience (60 years old). I feel that maybe I was passed up due to age however they will never admit to that.

Data Center Technicians can be a great retirement time job if you can land one.
