Thread regarding VMware layoffs

A message of hope: The Grass Can Be A Bit Greener

To my fellow VMware colleagues who are holding on tightly at Broadcom, terrified of leaving, but horrified at the “new reality” and not really happy just resting and vesting… I’d like to share my story as a glimmer of hope of one possible path forward.

I was a long time VMW person (>10 years) who was in a transition role at BC. I leveraged my personal network and was hired as a contractor by a former VMW leader who is now at another brand-name company. I negotiated an early exit from BC and collected my entire severance and transition bonus. Since starting as a contractor I’ve been able to demonstrate my value, and am now on a path to convert to an FTE.

The moral here is it IS possible to exit with dignity and pride, on your own terms, without the submit-and-pray full frontal as--ult job search. To do this requires confidence, grit, and a reasonably good personal network. Best of luck to each of you, regardless of the path you choose.

That's why all those with dignity and pride left BEFORE the acquisition by Broadcom.

Those of us stuck here now wish we had followed the now ex-employees long ago.

The org will look very flat. Just Sr Directahs, and DEs will remain. Everyone else will be a contractor.

Most employees will be converted to contractors at "partners". Outsourced. This is the revenue per employee game. The costs go down but the number of people working almost remains same. Most of IT moved from being VMware employees to being HCL employees.

What is the new broadcom package? I've heard many rumors on here, but most of them seem to just be trolls saying you'll get nothing. Is it really that much worse than vmware's?

How did you negotiate an exit package? Were you senior leadership or an exec?

Rest and vest is not really a viable considering the sweet VMware severance policy expired one year after the acquisition closed - which would be late(?) November.

That really is not much time, esp in this market.

Good for you two. Happy for you.

I'm happier at the new company. Broadcom is not evil and VMW was not angel. I couldn't stand the DEI and bloated structure.
There is no need to portray as good vs bad.

Not everyone has a strong network, but as a former VMware person myself who made the tough decision to leave, I'm so relieved. Sure the RSUs were nice, but for me, a life working at a more reasonable company without the sword of damacles hanging over my head is soooooooo much better for quality of life.
