Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

As you “get off of the train” and look for employment outside of Citi, don’t underestimate mid size or even smaller companies.

Used to, the midsize to small companies had to offer more pay than the larger companies because they could not give the same benefits. This has shifted.

Now, it seems that mid size to small companies ARE offering equal to more benefits than larger mega corp. I know as I look at the Citi benefits, compared to other companies, the benefits are average. Matching 401K, 80% med coverage, yada..yada….while appreciated, they are average benefits compared to elsewhere. Given this, why not leave for more money.

Branch out beyond the financial industry. A excel expert at Citi, can be an excel expert in the transportation industry, or insurance, or tech or medical. A tech expert at Citi, can be a tech expert elsewhere. A compliance guy, ditto, same thing.

While your at it, give the mid to small companies more than a passing glance.

Well, every company will have political groups, so there is that. I dislike feeling I have to join a political group or clique to feel safe. However, such is life.

Agree very much with the OP’s suggestion about branching out to other industries. The company is still a large, global entity and many companies that want to be global will value you more with this experience. That being said, if you work in bank compliance, then it is more challenging to move outside the industry. Said differently, a consumer products company might value your Excel financial analysis experience. Not many will necessarily value your FRB or OCC experience as that does not directly apply to consumer products.

Salary is something you can find anywhere a little more or less.

Big companies provide resources, learning opportunities, and strong reputations, while small companies require individuals to start from scratch. In Citi, politics often hinder the industrial knowledge acquisition and require new joiners to start from scratch.

Drifting back to what I learnt in Citi for past 7-8 years, I joined political gangs inside Citi to protect my position. I have nothing new to learn or offer to my project. The idle solution is to move to different project. I fear moving to different project might lead to leaving my political group and being unsafe.

Citi has to shuffle lot of people to remove the favoritism
