Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Up until 2 years ago Dell was great…

Dell really was a great place to work up until about 2 years ago. Then everything went to he-l. The biggest change was they brought Bain in who is clearly giving them terrible advice. I’ve let go of more people in the past 2 years than I ever had in my career.

Every single person I talk to is paranoid, demotivated and has no idea what the strategy for the company is or where it’s going.

It’s just layoff after layoff after layoff. People are paralyzed with a lack of work to do in many cases and they have a general lack of motivation.

This leadership team that has been recently constructed is terrible. They really have, at best poor decision making skills and have proven to be utterly incompetent. The closest thing to any strategy has been to create the “AI Factory” which people can see right through. They’ve done nothing new or relevant for the past couple of years.

They’ve ripped apart various product groups that were making money, are doing major consolidations of our cash cows and allowing decision to be made for engineering from people who have literally no idea what a day in the life of a software developer is about.

Meanwhile, they’re worried about how many days a hybrid person comes into an office? Really? That’s what concerns you? Much like an incompetent parent though there are no consequences so that’s just a waste of time.

I’m looking for a new job. If you aren’t you should. I’m not sure Dell is going to be able to recover from this. They talk about another 40 years. They should take it 40 days at a time. If they keep this up, they’ll just slide into being irrelevant.

Would love to hear theories from others.

Well, I quit just after getting my bonus 2 years ago . Loving retirement.

Just got back from a week at our cottage and decided to go to this website to see a bit of what is going on at Dell.

Kind of happy/sad to read that things are continuing to go down.

Get on with your life. I doubt any package is worth the hit to your mental health. My only wait was for my 1:1 interview to formalize my bonus. I wasn’t going to leave that behind.

100% agree with OP. The worst started about two years ago. Since then it's just downhill.

@cdt+1tEmyMBh I really don't believe that Dell has widespread incompetence. I do think it has a concentration of incompetence at the top. Worse, nobody is in a position to tell Darth Vader anything he doesn't want to hear. So strategies get put in place, big org-wide investments, and when they don't pay off, big cuts follow.

You’re a manger? You should be going over the results of tell dell then. We’ve let you know for the past 3 years our thoughts. But instead you’re all talking puppets that only focus on the positives and not the major negative feedback. You should focus more on tell dell results and not feedback from a layoff site. Have you voiced this feedback to your boss? To your director? I’m guessing 1000% no. Which is why we’re here. talking heads for managers that just do what they're told. Now I know you’re probably late for another pointless meeting to add more work to your already overworked and underpaid team.

A company can only get away with no innovation for so long. Profits are forced to zero and the only strategy left is to ride bubble waves and layoff. Middle management flailing around in buzz words and wasteful spreadsheet strategies is a symptom of the bigger problem.

Widespread incompetence and poor leadership can destroy decades of work in less than a year.
