How do you guys deal with this? I'm stressing so much that I'm starting to feel it affects my health. I wish I could stop but I haven't been able to find a way to spot thinking about it so far. With a bad job market and not being able to afford to lose my job, all I can do is worry 24/7.

I think the next motivation to drive us toward winning harder will be mandated demotions for staff above associate level, excluding people managers. The people coming in from college have masters and lots of lab and software experience. Talent management would do well to recognize that and stratify in IC bands more. There should be associate level with masters, then associate level 1, as the next group. People in the industry with 10-15 years should remain at level 1 if they don’t have a masters. If they do, then they would drop the associate prefix.
More demotions to save money and further erode the culture. The legacy being, after MDT is split and sold, and Geoff has the Martha Auditorium and Public Speaking Hockey Hall (MAPSHH) his greatest achievement will be to have made a lasting and destructive change to how people are hired, fired and demoted. I look forward to seeing him at shareholder meetings, on the board of many companies, government think tanks, Project 2052, and water fountains around the greater Minneapolis, Saint Paul metro area. Go Jeoff!
I had almost two decades in there and was laid off. The constant worry about lay-offs was a terrible environment to work in. I was lucky enough to find a new job (way better pay, less stress, no risk of lay off) after being laid off and it's wonderful. Hindsight, I should have left sooner but I really thought I could retire from there.
That's the next step. There are a lot of job openings in India. Those job openings include engineering, the backbone of this company.
It is more secure to work for a company that is growing revenue and profit organically and not one hallowing itself out from the inside out to maintain the illusion of growth. How long before they sell company owned real estate and then rent it back like private equity does?
My wise Pappy always said, have a portion of savings outside of those retirement plans for times like these. Always have "Plan B" in place folks! Nothing in life is absolute.
I hope we have lots of layoffs but that I am not affected. After the dust settles I will have great security.
I don't think anyone in this post is complaining about leadership... but being worried about a layoff is normal. I mean look at the company performance and economy, but I agree with the other posts, just focus on what you can control.
Stay away from this site.
It’s a toxic environment echo chamber of employees and ex employees who are not happy due to the cr-ppy leads-for-sh-t team.
Try to accomplish your tasks, and the chagrin of the posters here, be proud of your work. Stretch yourself to learn and get new experiences so you can prepare yourself for ‘your next’ rather than getting swallowed up by the negativity and toxicity. As someone who does quite a bit of hiring, I can tell you it’s an automatic red-flag when a candidate is leaving because they are disgruntled with leadership and the direction of their current company. Don’t stay positive because it’s good for Medtronic, do it because it’s good for you.
I’ll probably have a huge negative vote number on this comment but if the stress is genuinely impacting your health, hanging out in this cesspool of a message board going to improve that.
Take care of yourself, no job is worth swapping your well-being for.
Having a good amount of savings helps, I'm trying to be on the safe side and planning to have around 1 year of savings (I think I have around 7-8 months without selling any investments).
Sorry to hear that and I am in the same boat. Best advice I can give is try to do things to be as prepared as you can: update your resume, brush up on interview skills, network a bit more than normal. It helped me feel more prepared should it come my way.
At the end of the day, you can’t control what the company does, so just do what you can to be ready to hit the ground running.
