Thread regarding Rivian Automotive, Inc layoffs

Excuse or reality?

  • Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe says the EV industry slowdown is due to an "extreme" lack of choice.
  • Scaringe attributes it to a lack of variety in EV models under $50,000.
  • He believes there's a demand for diverse EV designs to compete with Tesla's dominance.

how well will a full EV do in snow, will it have enough power?

"maybe on the coastal urban cities it’s different"
no, they have long distance commutes and a huge amount of traffic
maybe the EV will cut down on pollution?

Maybe I live in a bubble. Work at one of the Detroit 3. Around here folks just aren’t interested in the full EVs yet. Mind you it’s the Midwest and lots of folks have long commutes and maybe on the coastal urban cities it’s different. Big issues I hear from local folks are charging time, charge availability plus price premium for what is perceived as a loss of function in the vehicle (see charge time and availability).

Also the cost to have home chargers installed is a hurdle for lots of folks. Guy at work I know was quotes over $5k because his current electrical panel didn’t have the capability for an EV charger. Cost would include electrical service upgrade plus charger install.
