Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

XOM or CVX - what's your take - which stock will do better over next 12 months?

who do you think will do better in the markets (over next 12 mo), chevron or exxon?

energy stocks did not preform that great in 2023 (and much of 2024) but if we assume that we'll have higher oil prices later this year and in 2025 (i know it's just an assumption but hey)... which of these stocks is the better buy?

not sure if the stabroek deepwater field in guyana (currently owned by hess) plays into this and has any impact, maybe, maybe not... the fight is on anyway.

exxon is trading at around 13x forward earnings. chevron has a forward P/E of 12.8, right around the sector average. both are ok here.

tons of free cashflow on both side... both pay stable (and growing) dividends...

maybe that hess deal impactings things in med term - regardless of the arbitration outcome chevron will have the hess merger to digest... and this maybe affects things in with medium-term and short-term gains. if this pans out maybe exxon might have a clearer path to short-term stock price gains..

so many questions... or should i just buy nvidia, close my eyes and say a prayer...

My largest non-ETF holding has always been (and currently is) XOM.

Held it for decades, but If I were buying today, I’d buy CVX. I think CVX does more share buybacks. IMHO, that moves the needle nowadays. Granted, they can always pull the plug on a buyback, but I think that they’re also positioning themselves better for a transition away from oil than XOM. i am not following this closely but again, it's my gut feeling...

On transitioning away from oil, this is a sensitive one - people get excited about the topic... I Don’t really have any specific metrics or signals to measure this, just my gut, it seems as if CVX is putting a bit more in that direction. could be more my personal perception and not reality, but CVX seems more into alternative fuels than XOM based upon some of their partnerships and investments. XOM seems more focused on reducing emissions and biofuels... maybe market does not care, maybe i should not care but they are both doing something.

I personally think there is a lot longer to go before oil becomes obsolete than most. I think consumers and investors are LAGELY overestimating the impact of EVs on oil demand. EVs might replace gas soon enough, but replacing diesel will take longer. Biodiesel has significant flaws and EV tech and infrastructure is nowhere near being close to where it needs to be for OTR freight... Jet fuel and plastics also need alternatives that I don’t see much progress on... Not to mention all the other petroleum products that come from a barrel of oil.

i'll still hold my XOM but if i was buying today i'd may go with some CVS shares
