Thread regarding Walgreens layoffs

Why is Walgreens hiring right now even though they are in the gutter?

I see many software engineer openings right now even with constant layoffs. Aren't these new hires just going to get laid off as well?

Here’s how it goes at Walgreens (from a former Director). Since Walgreens is so slow and disjointed there are positions that were probably requisitioned months ago. Layoffs happened and they put a freeze on non-essential hiring. But all those remained in the queue and had to be resubmitted. Leadership never wants to lose headcount so all these 25+ year leaders resubmitted everything and there’s such a massive amount coming in that there are batch headcount approvals. Basically if you have a business case and the comp is within budget then you can do what you want. Walgreens is so cutthroat right now that leadership of almost every department think they are in competition with each other. So they ask for the world and get a little bit. That little bit is even more than they realistically need but because there are so few efficiencies within the company, they get it. It’s a vicious cycle and one that will continue to lead to the demise. 90% of the Directors at the company remember the old days of Walgreens and refuse to adjust their expectations. They’re used to 20% raises (yes that was normal 15-20 years ago) and 150% bonuses. I couldn’t stand it and had to leave after 7 years.

Walgreens has a lot bigger problems than AI and ML. You don't need AI and ML to know that just basic business sense isn't working at Walgreens. Low sales, high prices...these are problems that the Romans could have solved without a computer.

Most likely for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Every company is using AI and ML now. Walgreens need to get on board. That's why they need software engineers.
