Staff threaten legal action against crackdown on workplace affairs at BP

From today's UK Mail On Sunday

BP risks being slapped with lawsuits from employees after serious concerns were raised about its crackdown on relationships at work.
The policy has been met with uproar. Staff are particularly upset by the retrospective demand for details of relationships as long as three years ago.

It has 'generated an awful lot of ill will', one City source said.

Employees feel the controversy around Looney had 'left problems' in its wake, the source added. Top City lawyers have told The Mail on Sunday that retrospectively demanding information on relationships reek of the Stasi, could be illegal and open the firm up to lawsuits.

Solicitors said applying new rules to past actions was effectively a breach of an employee contract. There are also worries about invasion of privacy.

It makes for interesting reading when you realise who the author is referring to in the examples.

Why do employees have to disclose "all relationships" but upper management is only required to disclose relationships from the past 3 years.

@ner+1t3l0Qtm If, as the article suggests, some senior staff with the money to do so take legal action against BP, this could run for a long time, get very messy in public and further tarnish the company name, as if it is not bad enough already. Bertard has a lot to answer for and so gave the females he was involved with because they too should have been declaring the relationship.

They needs to also investigate how many people were fired, layed off, or poorly reviewed on end of year reviews based on conflicts of interest.

There is a lot of people who have been treated very poorly despite their abilities, skill sets, credentials, and ability to lead well.

Lots of great leaders have been pushed out. Lots of great technical staff being passed up based of favoritism stemming from innapropriate relationships.

A lot of people at Bpx have been promoted via conflicts of interest.

It's interesting watching a lot of great hands leave Bpx for promotions at better companies. Anyone with a good head on their shoulders sees it.

Pull on tbe Bpx string and see what unravels. I'm telling you! If you are an HR Rep. doing research on inappropriate promotions here on this site then please look at Bpx over the last 5 years.

Lots of unqualified women in roles they shouldn't be in. I've watched it ruin great employees. So many great people have left over the politics and dishonorable and dishonest promotions. Family and friends are in places they should not be.

Innapropriate relationships are rampant in L48.

Pull on the Bpx strings and see what unravels. I personally know of employees that have reported this stuff to HR and to Ethics and Compliance and nothing was done. In fact, they further promoted these bad actors further after it was all reported.

Husband and wife, mistress and c suite, brother n law and father n law, buddies and frat friends, buddies and sorority friends, etc.

I won't throw names here but I highly encourage you to look into it. Plot the trend of nepotism vs turnover rate from people leaving willingly and voting with their feet.

Your reputation in industry is not as good as you might think.

@aum+1t3l0Qtm go on tell us who you were hooked up with. We won't pass it on. This could be hilarious because in a comment which was removed from this site, someone with inside information said that when Bertard was based in Houston, he was involved with a woman in their HR department. Imagine confessing to her about your office romances (assuming she's still there).

This process will be hilarious. Made sure they excluded the reinvent reorg which had conflicts of interest everywhere in the process and the sessions. Wished I’d not signed the EOI, could have had a nice law suit waiting.

Mail On Sunday
'One possible explanation for the change, according to City speculation, is that BP wants to know how and why some managers had been promoted over the past three years.'

Belitz added: 'Clearly they want to see how many employees were promoted via a conflict of interest.'

The fallout from BL's sense of entitlement continues, and there is so much anger towards him from staff over this. I would say employees should ignore it, but you run the risk that others who know about a relationship reporting it to HR. Turning employee against employee. Somebody should have put bromide in BL's tea years ago!! This puts the company name in the world media for all the wrong reasons. Last week was nine months since loverboy left the company, and nobody has employed him so far. Can't think why.
