Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

Michael Hansen's response to offshoring jobs to India

This is from a real Glassdoor response left by MH when replying to a review about offshoring:

Innovation includes regularly monitoring how we can run our operations in the most efficient way. This is not contrary but in fact completely aligned with our credo and ethos. If we decide to relocate operations to our colleagues in India, this always done with an eye towards improving quality and lowering cost.

Lowering cost, yes, but improving quality?? How does outsourcing work to India lead to an improvement in quality? Are the employees in India more skilled than those in the US, Michael?

"They're firing people in the US and giving that person's entire job to an employee in India. "

Cengage is morally bankrupt. There should be penalties on companies who fire U.S. workers and send those jobs overseas.

I know we have vendors in the Philippines, but I believe India is the only place where we're sending complete jobs. They're firing people in the US and giving that person's entire job to an employee in India.

What countries other than India are being used for offshoring? I thought at one point there was at least one other country.

Did anyone not pay attention to the fact he said CS jobs can be done by robots and that we are outsourcing because they can do jobs better than us? Or was that just me. It is nice to see how we are viewed. If Straive was the way to go then why do they escalate 95% of their calls. And when they do, the first thing you hear out of the customers mouth is “Thank goodness you speak English.”

I'm interested to know where other CM's have ended up since we'll all be laid off at some point.

I actually know 3 CMs at Cengage who either 1. got hired immediately by another company, 2. moved to a lateral role at another company, 3. got hired as a learning designer.

This is evidence that CMs at Cengage have transferable skills.

Contrary to what one person here posted, Project Management requires many cross industry skills—primarily soft skills—that are marketable and valued outside of publishing. Virtually all companies that are engaged in complex, multi-team projects rely on project managers. Many pay better than Cengage even when below a lateral move.

I can't think of a more dead end career choice than "content manager/project manager/project editor/whatever they are calling it this year" at Cengage. I read that description and nothing has changed with the job in 20 years. There is no subject matter expertise whatsoever. Your job is just shuffling paperwork in between actual SMEs inside and outside of the company. I did the job for 2 years and it is soul deadening. On top of that it gives you exactly zero skills that are applicable outside of Cengage. Everyone I know who had a long term "career" in that role and was eventually laid off (which is almost all of them) had an impossible time finding another job. Most of them had to settle for IC work at half the pay or a completely unrelated job that likely paid less than what they were making at Cengage. The best you can hope for in that job is to not be laid off, which is extremely unlikely. It is the first place Cengage goes to trim the fat. Sooner or later its your time. It boggles my mind that anyone would choose to stay in that job longer than 4-5 years.

Be careful clicking any Cengage workday links from this site if you are a current Cengage employee and currently on the clock reading this site. The Cengage IT Dept can track the IP address of anyone who clicks a specific job opening link from here and they can use that to track the IP address you use when you log into their system during work hours. Use caution and common sense.

Greetings,

What some are calling 'offshoring' is Cengage giving back to our global partners across the globe.

Following the launch of Cengage Unlimited, a game-changing, unmitigated success, and the ongoing industry-wide excitement around Project Horizon, the Leadership Team has focused on increasing global diversity across all teams.

Recruiting Cenforce members in developing companies has been a boon to productivity, offers scalability, and has increased diversity throughout he company.

Full Stop!
