Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

How did we end up here?

I joined Citi only a year ago to be swept up into this mess. I thought Citi would help to advance my professional skills and opportunities but now I worry I will forever be typecasted. Does anyone actually feel any level of comfort with their role or do you also worry you're on a sinking ship?

I joined Citi 8 years ago and I now know less than I did when I started. The work is not challenging, technology is not new and whats worse is the legacy employees feel threatened when you bring up improvements. Most people still working at Citi are just trying to make it to retirement and thats why Citi will never become what it once was. The key to making it at Citi is to be older mid 40s and up. Kiss up to the boss and make them your friend. It doesn’t matter what you know all that matters is you are friends with your manager or that you’ve been there so long they rather keep you than lay out a large severance.

Citi is in deep trouble with the regulators. They’ve had to rework the risk reduction efforts because Citi has been lazy and rewriting policy left and right, led by Citibanamex staff. Regulators keep rejecting the work as incomplete and inaccurate.
Citi has been warned of a downgrade and that’s exactly where things are headed. Lame Jane is structuring the bank in chunks ready to sell before the downgrade happens.
There’s no mobility or growth for employees. All efforts are to focused on getting things moving to look like the bank is doing ok.
Stop listening to management and start looking after yourself before the ship sinks. Good luck!

I am also not growing my skill sets for a while now, just surviving while oversea teams does the real work and hogs up the skills I wish I could participate in. At this point I am just collecting a paycheck and surviving. Its a drawback, yes I get money so I can survive in life but I am wasting my time and when I go for an interview, they may question if I am worth that salary since my skillset may not be up to par to what is required in the real market for my role.

You are not alone, everyone is either looking for a new role or should be. Citi is a dinosaur.
