"Sanjay was rumored to have influenced GF's decision to switch from 22FDSOI IP development from ARM to INVECAS because his wife was one of the main investors in INVECAS . Eventually, this move paid off when Synopsys acquired INVECAS. GF lost billions of dollars due to their inability to deliver on the 22FDSOI technology to Sony for drivers of Apple iphone, from which Sanjay and his wife profited significantly.

Petro dollars, in this case MUBADALA $$, from the other side of the world, has influenced the culture of many tech companies in the Bay Area. That's why every corrupt manager at GFis looking out for their personal interests. Someone should create a documentary about the systemic corruption within GF.

SMIC is working on 3nm. They have accountability measures in place, unlike the minion-based culture at GF. At SMIC, someone like Richard Tr, TC, TM were fired and humiliated over 10 years ago and never became an SVPs or CEO.

I think we would be in a much better position with Sanjay

SMIC has never developed any technology on their own. Most of their technologies they bought from IBM other than 7nm. China doesn't have too many choices but to build things at SMIC, the walls are coming in closer on China in the semi market. It is not surprising Chinese companies will have to use SMIC and their revenue will increase. The real problem for SMIC is without EUV technology they cannot scale, even their 7nm technology using double and triple patterning has tolerances like a 12nm or larger node. Unless China can crack the EUV challenge and shrink dimensions the end for them will be 12nm range. In addition, SMIC is known not to be able to develop anything on their own, they lost in court for stealing ideas from TSMC and TSMC owned part of SMIC out of that lawsuit. I'm not sure if TSMC still owns any of SMIC or not does anyone know that? For 12nm and below type nodes SMIC is a direct competitor of UMC and GF. UMC will hold their own with differentiation. GF on the other hand with nearly zero differentiation could be in trouble!!

With $1.75 billion revenue for the first quarter, SMIC is ahead of the two other leading pure-play foundries, UMC (which earned $1.71 billion, up 0.8% YoY) and GlobalFoundries (which earned $1.549 billion, down 16% YoY). As a result, SMIC is the No. 2 pure-play foundry in the world for now.

I remember when Sanjay Jha mentioned that in one quarter, 2016, GF gained an additional 1% of the market share. He even claimed that GF is making ABC nervous. Maybe Morris Chang and SMIC should ask Sanjay, Who? down 16% YoY?
