Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Where to next?

I've spent the last 14 years of my career invested deep into VMware. I was always sure it was a safe horse to bet on. I never imagined the brand would be destroyed so rapidly. VMware was once an easily accessible tech used everywhere and mostly loved. Now, VMware is a dirty word. Every discussion with customers is some form of "how do we get off VMware"?

So the question for me now, is, where to pivot? Public cloud? Identity? I have a good 5-10 working years left.

Folks on my team are getting cut despite being competent…. “Engineers” being kept that need hand held to generate server certs and do basic troubleshooting on a server. Won’t be our problem much longer.

Hope for your own sake you have used some of those 14 years to upskill and stay relevant rather than just relying on the VMware econsystem.

If not, start now.

USA needs to stop hogging all the cheap labor and save some for the rest of the world.

Send cheap Hispanic labor to India and they can help the cheap Indian workers make India great again.

yet they can’t ssh to a host.

That's right. Tech support has gone from 'hire the best' to 'hire the cheapest', which just so happens to be India.

I don't blame the indians taking these jobs any more than I blame a starving dog for eating the food that was given to them.

Who I do blame is the CIOs who think tech support is like janitorial services, so they buy the cheapest warm body possible.

Good quality tech support was here and gone in one generation. Now it's mo--nindians who are lost unless they are following a script, and even then can barely function. Sad.

5 years left is not so much.... just stick with Broadcom until you can and vest RSU... Save more than usual just in case...

95% of the customers are Indian Id--ts

It depends on your skill set. If you architect cloud solutions then any big name CSP will consider you and if your a keyboard jockey or developer then try a VMW partner that does migration of keeping the lights on. The other direction may be some other line of work that strikes your fashion.

Get out of technology. It su-ks!

Too true. I also have 5 to 10 years in my career, and tech may not be in my future.

When I started, tech had some of the brightest people I've ever worked with. Still does, but now 95% of the customers are Indian Id--ts who couldn't SSH into a host if you threatened their rooster.

The only fiduciary the board has in the USA is to its stockholders.

They got shareholders a huge windfall.

Fiduciary duty is not all about shareholders, look it up.

The money grubbing fact free myopic world we are living in is something to behold.
