Thread regarding Lockheed Martin Corp. layoffs

HR Nightmare

I have tried to get a job with LM for years! I worked for a competitor for many years and have over 600 connections. I have been rejected more than 20 times and was even told that I was too old for a particular position. I know that if I could past the evil bi--h bouncers at the door and actually got an interview I would be hired. But HR would rather hire a younger person with less experience than hire a qualified and experienced person. Is ageism a common practice at LM? This is a company and not secret club. I’m feeling black listed for no reason and I’m wondering if I have any recourse. Any thoughts?

I know that the previous poster thought they were being funny, but the sad irony is that a supermarket with a decent union has far better healthcare than we do. My kid works part-time at the local Acme and his health benefits and tuition reimbursement are simply better. Full stop.

You always hear about what a great job Lockheed is, and that might have been true 30 years ago, but 20 years back we began sliding downward, and about 10 years back? Well, I began telling people to look elsewhere if they were looking for a decent job.

Is there a secret club? Yeah. Just like every other place. Did you get passed over due to your age? Probably. His company has lost more age discrimination lawsuits than any other I can think of. It’s crazy, and yet with all of that, all the ethics training and compliance modules, our HR and leadership just don’t learn. So every couple of months we get to see the company name in the paper for some large award given to a former employee because he/she was blatantly discriminated against due to their age.

You also have one other thing that probably working against you. Your current salary. Nobody really likes to acknowledge it, but LM pays less than average in the industry for our engineers. We’ve relied on our reputation to get past that for a long, long time. So when we have someone apply and they’re in the upper band of the salary range that a job is posted for, HR usually discards their resume. The company simply doesn’t want to pay the $, and would rather hold out for someone willing to do the job for less. If that means that they end up with a lesser qualified or talented candidate, then so be it. As far as the HR folks and the hiring manager are concerned, they stayed within the preferred bogey and saved the company some money.

And if you go through the threads here, and on almost every job board, you’ll hear almost the exact same story.
