Thread regarding Alphabet Inc. (Google) layoffs

The reality slowly seeps though

"I don't think it's crazy to believe that half the white-collar staff at Google probably does no real work," he said. "The company has spent billions and billions of dollars per year on projects that go nowhere for over a decade, and all that money could have been returned to shareholders who have retirement accounts."

David Graeber's "Bullsh-t Jobs" is one of my favorite all-time reads.

Highly recommend to these employees.

This article was mostly about fake work, not having enough work to do, and overstaffed companies, and I can totally relate to this
Seen a bunch a teams literally having so much free time; all they do it go to meetings

Late reply, but note the quote is about the concept of "irrelevant jobs" in Google and other big companies, including the "professional managerial class" -- not that individual workers are not doing work.

Both can be true and probably are at most companies. But the problem of employees putting in effort that yields little useful output seems like a more fundamental and difficult leadership problem.

@dhc+1spbJPlv, the majority of vagabonds are in the office and not WFH. Eliminate the leadershit with zero strategy and zero management skills and you will see.

90% of startups fail. 10% within the first year. So many projects will fail within Google. But there is a lot of learning and lessons learned from failure which is valuable in the job market.

May be a small percentage may be slacking, not majority of employees. Some of them are burned working on projects which are in production or shipped to a lot of customers. Many take break from projects or go to upper level after years of hard work and grinding!

This has been known for a long time. Investors are talking about this publicly now because they want companies to take action.

I believe that this could be said for the majority of corporations today. People are simply not doing anything towards the companies product or bottom line. If employees are WFH their jobs should either be eliminated or outsourced.

No doubt that being a quasi government company allows them to squander billions.
