Thread regarding Broadcom Corp. layoffs

Performance review

Hi there!

I'm a former VMware employee who survived the first round of layoff.

As far as I have understood we will be assigned a 1-2-3 grade for the performance review that will also affect our bonus. 1 the best grade and 3 the worst.

I have a couple of questions for the Broadcom veterans:

  1. Is there any rule on the percentage of 1-2-3 that a manager needs to assign? In other words are managers forced to provide a certain amounts of 3 for example?
  2. With a 3 grade will you automatically be put on PIP?

I'm asking this not because I'm bad or I don't know how to do my job but I have the feeling that in the last period I'm loosing visibility in my team and with all the confusion of new managers / colleagues who left ecc ecc... I'm like loosing motivation/confidence so I just want to be prepared on the worst case scenario...

For vmware it will be 50% 3 , 45% 2 , and 5 % 1. HT wants to rid of people from VMware until it reaches the target of total 7k vmware folks.

No need to worry if you are reasonably productive. Very few people got 3. Those who did I knew are basically showing they don't want the job.
Hock is not out there to get rid of people who produce. It's all about revenue to head count ratio as someone mentioned.

I’ll take grade 4, quitting.

That’s stupid. If you quit you can’t file for unemployment. Assuming if you get let go as a rank 3 they’ll do everything to make it for cause so there’s no obligation to pay severance. At least that’s what I would do.

Read a piece titled The Hatchet Man's Playbook. It's all about lay offs and office politics and how to beat them.

Is it possible to work towards Rank 3 for sometime and eventually get a package or end up being let go without severance?

Hock gives GMs three options: to pick from (exact ratios might be slightly off in last two but you get the idea)

  • Everyone gets 2 (what the Symantec GM selected our first year since it was already a rough year)
  • 70% gets 2, 20% rank 1, and 10% rank 3
  • 90% rank 2, 5% rank 1, 5% rank 3

When in the year are performance reviews scheduled?

Every division has stacked ranking with forced quotas ~20% Rank 1, 70% Rank 2, and 10% Rank 3. Mainframe also has mid-year reviews to say what direction you are trending so there were no surprises at the end of the year. We increase the mid year rank 3 to 15% as a "scare and repair" tactic... very motivating in a bad economy. There's always paperwork to justify each ranking so don't bother fighting it.

It's great if you are a top performer but hard if you just like to coast.Hard on manager because directors and VPs always take more Rank 1's for themselves and force you to pick more Rank 3's.

Getting rank 3 doesn't mean you'll be managed out of the company right away, but you do not want to get r3 twice in a row. You get a nice bonus multiplier for R1. If you don't have the energy, then just work hard enough to be a strong 2 on the cusp of R1 and you'll never have to worry.

Coming from lovey dovey silicon valley cultures, get that out of your mindset. Broadcom is only about the money and profit-to-employee ratio. It's not for everyone it just "is what it is."

Manager's will give 1's to the very few exceptional performers if budgets etc allow, otherwise everyone gets a 2. If you're total sh-t you'll get a 3. I'm not that good, and I've always got a 2, so don't worry (unless you're total sh-t).

Random numbers will be assigned. No one cares. Don’t take it seriously, just start looking for a new job. Time better spent.
