At VMware, the pods weren’t in the background, they were front and center on all hands calls and other group meetings.
You personal interests are just that , personal. The workplace isn’t for fulfilling your desire for hobbies or creating groups of people with shared interests which bleed over into professional life imho.

The result is few people are actually capable of creating anything, and just and project manage everything. This was one of the main drivers of VMware’s slow descent into mediocrity and irrelevance
