Why not do it?

Shareholders do not have the opportunity to ask questions in the earnings call. Just analysts.
Aside from a fear of retribution, one also really needs to understand the full context of what's being asked, without emotion or a desire to attack. Asking "are more layoffs coming", "why did you take a bonus", "when are employees seeing more money or promotions" or "why did you make poor decisions", aren't productive questions within the world of an earnings call full of very wealthy investors and make or breaks. I believe all shareholders should be inquiring about the company they are heavily invested in, but we must be careful to not insert our own fears as employees or be emotionally driven, and instead contextualize ourselves as part owners in a business with in depth knowledge on the nuances (good, bad and ugly) of running a business within this industry prior to inquiring. Research is necessary prior to any earnings call and questions.
That said, I really hope more of us come forward with questions that will assist in shedding any additional light into the direction of the company while trying not to fuel the already burning fire to those on the outside.
Fear of retribution.
