I keep hoping after every new layoff that we'll have a decent amount of time to recover and relax, but within months something else happens. Is this how things will be from now? I feel like we can all collectively kiss job security goodbye and just get used to the way things work now.

The only job security at UHC is in the law department....which is frightening to even consider...very sad, indeed!
News flash you never had job security. UHG has always been like this so at least 1 layoff per qtr in perpetuity. Most of the time you will not be aware since not your business unit. In general there has been no job security for my entire post college experience of 34 yrs so nothing new. 20 + managers here. 10+ layoffs. at least 6 different industries. Act like a hired g-n zero loyalty unless some $$ lands in your lap.
No such thing as “job security” in any org- public, for profits or non profits. Have been in all and seen many just or unjust RIFs/termination.
Invest in yourself - credential, skills and an updated resume at all time. They are using AI to screen/interview candidates. Key words search might just get your resume tossed by an AI. Don’t be complacent !
UHC seems to be a sinking ship. Others may follow. The healthcare industry is on life support. AW interests may be elsewhere. The UK is trying very hard to privatize healthcare. They can't afford to provide free medical to their citizens.
At will employment (which most companies are now) are not careers and should not be thought of as such. Security in the workforce is knowing and being in a place where if tomorrow you want to up and quit, you can! Thinking that you or your role isn't replaceable is what gets folks in trouble.
Recover and relax?
Job security is an illusion. Your security is you and your abilities to handle your finances well and be able to find and/or make work.
If the c-suite is older than 3-5 years then it’s time to make good on promises made. If your strategy didn’t work, then layoffs are your backup plan. Hitting quarterly numbers promised is the only goal. So yes, this is now the norm.
