Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

To those who are job hunting

Do not give up! I have spent 4 months applying to hundreds of jobs, interviewing, stressing... I finally landed an incredible opportunity at a competitor. It IS possible! Here are some things I learned in the process:

  1. Cold applying via LinkedIn or company websites generates a very low percentage of interviews and is very discouraging. Less than 1% to be exact
  1. Having a friend or colleague submit your resume to the hiring manager has a really high success rate. I would say of the 5 jobs my friends referred me to, I interviewed for 3 of them and 2 of them went to the final rounds
  1. Working with a head hunter or recruiter is also your best bet because they advocate for you, know the market well, and have specific roles they are trying to fill. This is actually how I was given my offer
  1. Use AI to help rewrite your resume and to help you study for job interviews. A good prompt I used 'I am going to paste my resume and then the job description. Act as an interviewer, asking 1 question at a time. After each of my answers, rate me on a scale of 1 to 10 and turn provide me with an alternative response that is more favorable.' many of the questions asked by ChatGPT were actually asked by the interviewers.
  1. Spruce up the layout/style of your resume. Pay the extra $20 to get a modern layout, or find free samples online. It is worth the investment
  1. After all of your hard work, once you finally land the job, and I know you will.. Do not accept a counter offer. Remember why you were looking in the first place.

Best of luck to all! ❤️❤️❤️

Why would anyone care if their manager knew they were looking for employment outside of Citi? What difference would that make? That is the goal isn’t it, to run people off?
I’d think that management would be happy to put a tic in that box.

@1qdd+1sPk6TF7, the whole world knows every single person inside Citi is looking for new role outside. Atleast, it will alarm your management to give you better pay.

If you go to LinkedIn and click the EDIT button on your profile for "Edit Job Preferences" - then scroll down and select Recruiters only for Visibility :)
"Visibility (who can view you’re open to work) "
"Recruiters only
Limited to people using LinkedIn Recruiter
While we take steps not to show recruiters at your current company, we can’t guarantee complete privacy."

Post ID: @1rjx+1sPk6TF7 Please be aware that around your profile picture even if it's blank in the upper left corner, the words "Open To Work" will show to the whole world, which means even Citi HR and internal employees can see you're looking for a new job.

One more piece of advice! In LinkedIn, you have the option to show that you are OPEN TO WORK but ONLY to HR recruiters outside of your company. Definitely worth it! I had many recruiters contact me this way too

Me too, could you share headhunter companies you used?

I love it when a recruiter on LinkedIn contacts me for a role at Citi. Did you not set your filter to leave out those already working there? Or did you think I quit or was laid off and just didn't update my status? Worth a chuckle at least but not more of my time.

In Q2 2024 we are in the late expansion phase of the business cycle. Afterwards, its a recession or “soft landing”. The recession phase typically lasts for months to a year.

NOW that being said, we may have already been in or am currently in a recession phase, its unknown right now. Usually you don’t know if you’ve been in a recession until the national numbers are crunched a few quarters after the fact. The FED works their magic and says “we entered a recession phase 3 months ago etc…” Right now, everyone feels like they are in a recession due to the huge hike in prices and lack luster hiring.

Either way….after its all said and done, we enter the early phase of the business cycle. This is the start of long running bull markets which leads to company growth and explosive hiring trends. It’ll be at that time you’ll have a much greater success at being interviewed.

LinkedIn is useless now a days. Specially every one is job hunting inside Citi. The best approach is to move using friends and references. Check with friends who already left Citi and they might help you to pass the resume. Headhunters might help for Contracting roles. If your manager left for new job, just follow him.

Wow, at least in the olden days s*s were provided with food and shelter, and they didn't give 2 fks about their owner. There was some dignity in that. Nowadays you need to jump through the hoops like a flunky you are just to be noticed by the owners, go through 7 rounds interviews to get your teeth examined and prove you're a good submissive boy - and with food, shelter and possible layoffs few months down the road being your own problem.

Cheers for your new role! Citi definitely lost on and those they laid off because they will be motivated to work harder and smarter for their next employers who will reap in on that success.

I've been doing the LinkedIn game for quite a while (about 5-10 roles a day) and it can be quite discouraging. Do you have any recommended headhunters or recruiting agencies? If that seems to yield a better possibility of success (in tandem with having referrals from other companies), that would save me more time and headaches.
