Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

Douglas House Innovation Office to close

Very sorry for all those affected. They have been told to be in Sunbury 3 days a week from September.

@ptil+1sEyLrqb We're an engineering company and we should stick to that. Tech in as far as it makes us do our engineering better okay but no more than that.

This closure makes it very clear to me that BP is not serious about becoming a real tech company. So I will definitely be walking. We have made some much progress with design, innovation and analytics over the past couple of years in Douglas house and now they are ki-ling all of that.. such a shame! They are going to lose the company’s best talent which has taken a lot of effort to find! We managed to add some great talent from renowned tech companies by having an office like this but now…

Doesn't surprise me with the fiasco that is bp. I worked there 17 years, many many offices. They moved many of us to Bedfont lakes for a couple of years and had to pay that lease after closure. In Stockley Park they closed an office as they forgot to count contractors in the headcount (no joke!!)

People in Sunbury are not amused by the move either. It is already painful to find a car parking space there, we are bracing ourselves for a mayhem with both car parking and general facilities.

They are hoping people will quit because of the long commute.

The fact that in the contract says that you can work anywhere in the UK says a lot.

It is not unethical to close an office and ask people to work somewhere else.

But wait until the roles are moved to Pune …

Closure of Douglas house shows bp is an oil company not a tech company

Not shocked - after making a huge show of their search for a new rental space to replace Naperville they opted to shut labs and move residual staff to 30SW in 2022. Nearly twice the distance as this move, 0 compensation. Expected more protection for UK staff but guess not.

The fact that in the contract says that you can work anywhere in the UK does not say much. The legal thing does not mean it's an ethical thing as well...

Read your contract. It most likely says that the company can ask you to work anywhere in the UK.

Nothing wrong to Sunbury. Move to Feltham if your commute is too long.

It is not commute costs...better for everyone to work 9 hours home than work 6 in office + commute for 3

@1dvo+1sEyLrqb ask for the company to cover any additional travel costs.

They are expecting us to go to Sunbury which is near Heathrow 3 times a week. If you live in south east it will take you more that 100 minutes... this is ridic!!

Good. Massive waste of money. Was the lease up for renewal or will even more money be wasted by closing it?
