Layoffs and disciplinary firing hits Tesla Berlin

May has been a terrible month for Tesla Berlin for two main reasons:

  1. Cost-cutting and voluntary layoffs, which affected more than 400 employees across all teams.
  1. Disciplinary firings and terminations of some managers and lead-level employees who were embroiled in corruption, ran illegal internal chat groups, and shared vulgar, s-xual, and highly objectionable content and images. This behavior had been ongoing for a long time, and they operated internally like a close-knit mafia, benefiting themselves. Managers, leads, and senior staff from EPC - Controls, Construction, and other departments were investigated and terminated without voluntary compensation. Some fortunate individuals managed to sign voluntary exit contracts and leave before any action could be taken against them.

It was a complete disaster.

Excerpts from an investigative story by a blogger journalist, translated into English…

The situation regarding Tesla's Berlin Gigafactory and illegal chat groups involving employees sharing inappropriate content is both troubling and complex. Here is a detailed account of the events and its implications.

Incident Overview

Discovery of Inappropriate Chat Groups: Tesla employees at the Berlin Gigafactory were found to be participating in private chat groups where they shared vulgar, s-xual content, and offensive memes. These groups were hosted on internal platforms like MS Teams and externally on WhatsApp and Telegram. The content reportedly included racist, s-xist, and otherwise offensive material, which contravenes both legal standards and Tesla’s internal policies.

Internal and External Reactions: Upon discovering these chat groups, Tesla initiated an internal investigation to identify the extent of the involvement and the specific individuals responsible. The company also communicated with local authorities to ensure compliance with legal standards and to address any potential criminal behavior.

Company Response

Investigation and Disciplinary Actions: Tesla's internal probe aimed to trace the origins of the chat groups and identify all participants. Disciplinary measures were taken against employees found to be involved. This included warnings, suspensions, and terminations depending on the severity of their involvement.

Policy Revisions and Training: In response to the incident, Tesla reviewed and strengthened its policies related to employee conduct and use of communication platforms. The company mandated additional training sessions focusing on workplace ethics, anti-harassment, and appropriate use of communication tools.

Broader Implications

Corporate Culture: The incident raised questions about the workplace culture at Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory and whether there were broader issues related to oversight and employee behavior. It also sparked discussions about the challenges multinational companies face in maintaining a consistent ethical standard across diverse geographical locations.

Legal and Ethical Standards: German labor laws and European regulations on workplace behavior set strict guidelines that companies must follow, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful work environment. The incident underscored the necessity for companies to not only implement but also actively enforce policies that prevent misconduct.

Public Perception and Reputation Management: Public disclosure of such incidents can significantly impact a company's reputation. Tesla faced scrutiny from both the media and the public, necessitating transparent and effective crisis management strategies. The company’s response, including swift action and clear communication, was crucial in mitigating potential damage to its brand.

Moving Forward

Continued Monitoring and Enforcement: Tesla committed to ongoing monitoring of employee behavior and the enforcement of its policies to prevent future incidents. The company also emphasized the importance of employees feeling empowered to report misconduct without fear of retaliation.

Building a Positive Work Environment: Tesla aimed to reinforce a positive, inclusive, and respectful work culture through continuous improvement of its human resources practices. This included promoting diversity and inclusion initiatives and ensuring that all employees understand and adhere to the company’s values and ethical standards.

The Tesla Berlin chat group incident highlights the critical importance of proactive and responsive measures in maintaining workplace integrity and ethical conduct. It serves as a reminder that companies must remain vigilant in their efforts to foster a respectful and professional work environment, especially in today’s interconnected and digital world.

A dark mirror tale of symbolism and alternate reality...

In the ancient land of Tesla, renowned for its peaceful innovations, a dark alliance was forged. David, a cunning strategist, and Goliath, a towering giant of brute strength, were hired by the envious kingdom of Epcistra to bring chaos to Tesla.

United by greed and a thirst for power, David and Goliath descended upon Tesla. Villages were plundered, workshops destroyed, and fear spread like wildfire. The innocent and truthful citizens of Tesla, unprepared for such brutality, were helpless against their onslaught.

David’s brilliant tactics and Goliath’s sheer force made them an unstoppable force of destruction. They dismantled Tesla's defenses with ease, outmaneuvering the kingdom's efforts to protect its people. The peaceful land, once a beacon of innovation and harmony, fell into despair.

The once-thriving kingdom of Tesla lay in ruins, a testament to the devastation wrought by David and Goliath. Their names became synonymous with te---r, their legacy one of unbridled cruelty and destruction. In the end, Tesla's light was extinguished by the darkness of their combined might, leaving behind a haunting reminder of what happens when ruthless ambition goes unchecked.

(No innocent villagers were harmed in the making of this story, but nothing can be promised about the employees...)

The mafia of EPC is real and what more proof is needed when they can even get the true stories of ex and current employees deleted from a public forum which had the names of the culprits in it. SHAME!

By deleting the posts, they think that people wouldn’t know the guilty ones, but they are mistaken. Some losers are out but other losers are still inside waiting to be accommodated in a different team and department - TS so that they can spread their sh-t there…

I would like to share my story about betrayal. I interviewed with Tesla and after some rounds of interviews I got an offer letter to join as an engineer in Tesla Berlin office. I was working for another company in Asia and was very happy to get this opportunity to work for Tesla (my dream company and job).

I put in my papers and was about to leave my old company. But to my shock, I got an email that my job offer was rescinded without proper explanation. I was within the last week of notice period when I got this news. To make matters worse, I was on a work visa in another country which was tied to my employment. I reached out to my hiring manager on LinkedIn to understand the situation but he never responded back!!

I will not share the name of the department or the team. It's up to the readers to trust me or not but I don't care. I was not alone and the internet is full of such horrible stories. One thing for sure is correct is this is a soul less place where even the hiring manager didn't had the empathy to reply back and answer my questions. Good that I never joined...

As an ex - Tesla Giga Berlin employee, last year in 2023, I was asked to leave just 1 week before the end of my probation period by Eric Muders from EPC. He didn’t gave me any warning and said that I will get a confirmation but to my shock I didn’t.
When I tried to apply to other teams outside EPC then he threatened me not to apply to another team and go away without making any issues.

As I was in probation, I didn’t got any layoff benefit as well. I had to take unemployment benefit for 3-4 months and then I got a job.

These people should be punished!!

The disciplinary firings could be to save on severance packages? Investigation ongoing against employees. Right now I doubt that 400 employees are already fired or laid off. When will they start firing more employees and how many is the target?
